Kilimanjaro Marangu Route 4 days
The Marangu Route is one of the most popular routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it approaches Kilimanjaro from the southeastern side and is particularly known for its relatively gradual trail and mountain-hut accommodation.
The 4-day Marangu Route is a short and demanding Kilimanjaro climbing program designed for trekkers who want to reach the summit within a limited timeframe. The climb passes through several distinct vegetation zones, from tropical rainforest at the lower slopes to heath and moorland, alpine desert, and the high-altitude summit zone.
Unlike most other Kilimanjaro routes, Marangu provides accommodation in mountain huts, where trekkers sleep in dormitory-style rooms. Meals are normally served at the huts, making the route convenient for travelers who prefer not to camp.
The summit, Uhuru Peak, stands at approximately 5,895 metres (19,341 feet) above sea level. Reaching the summit requires determination, physical preparation, and careful attention to altitude acclimatization.

Route Highlights
-
Trek Africa’s highest mountain and reach Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m.
-
Experience several of Kilimanjaro’s major ecological zones.
-
Walk through the beautiful montane rainforest.
-
Enjoy views of Mawenzi and Kibo, two of Kilimanjaro’s major volcanic peaks.
-
Stay in mountain huts rather than camping in tents.
-
Experience a challenging summit night and sunrise from the upper slopes of Kilimanjaro.
-
Descend through the scenic Marangu Route after the summit.
Accommodation
One of the main characteristics of the Marangu Route is its hut accommodation. The huts provide basic shelter from the mountain weather and generally have dormitory-style sleeping arrangements.
Trekkers should expect simple mountain facilities rather than hotel-style accommodation. Sleeping arrangements are shared, and bathroom facilities are basic. The availability of huts makes Marangu a popular option for climbers who prefer not to carry or sleep in tents.
Altitude and Acclimatization
Altitude is one of the most important factors on Kilimanjaro. As elevation increases, the amount of available oxygen decreases, and some trekkers may experience symptoms of acute mountain sickness (AMS).
Common symptoms can include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and loss of appetite. More serious altitude-related illness can occur and requires immediate attention.
The short 4-day itinerary allows less acclimatization than longer Kilimanjaro programs. Trekkers should therefore walk at a comfortable pace, stay well hydrated, eat regularly, and communicate any symptoms to their guide.
The commonly used principle “pole pole”, meaning “slowly, slowly” in Swahili, is particularly important on Kilimanjaro.

Best Time to Climb
Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout much of the year, but the generally preferred periods are the drier seasons.
The main trekking seasons are:
-
January to March: Generally drier and colder, with the possibility of snow around the summit.
-
June to October: Generally dry and popular for trekking.
-
November to December: Short rains can occur.
-
April to May: The long-rain period generally brings wetter trail conditions.
Weather on Kilimanjaro can change rapidly, and conditions near the summit can be very different from those at the mountain’s lower elevations.

Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut
After breakfast, drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate, where registration and park entry procedures are completed. The trek then begins through the lush montane rainforest, with the trail gradually ascending toward Mandara Hut.
The forest is home to a variety of plants and wildlife, and the cool, shaded environment makes this section of the trek enjoyable. After reaching Mandara Hut, trekkers have time to rest and explore the surrounding area before dinner and an overnight stay.
-
Starting elevation: 1,860 m
-
Mandara Hut: 2,700 m
-
Distance: Approximately 8 km
-
Trekking time: 3–4 hours
-
Habitat: Montane rainforest
-
Overnight: Mandara Hut
Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut
After breakfast, continue the ascent toward Horombo Hut. The trail gradually leaves the rainforest and enters the heath and moorland zone, where the landscape becomes more open.
On a clear day, trekkers can enjoy views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak. The gradual pace allows the body to adjust to the increasing altitude. Arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon, followed by dinner and an overnight stay.
-
Starting elevation: 2,700 m
-
Horombo Hut: 3,720 m
-
Distance: Approximately 11 km
-
Trekking time: 5–7 hours
-
Habitat: Heath and moorland

Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut
After breakfast, leave Horombo Hut and continue toward Kibo Hut. The trail crosses the Saddle, a high-altitude desert area situated between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter the alpine desert zone. The final section toward Kibo Hut can feel demanding because of the altitude. After arriving, enjoy an early dinner and rest in preparation for the midnight summit attempt.
-
Starting elevation: 3,720 m
-
Kibo Hut: 4,700 m
-
Distance: Approximately 9–10 km
-
Trekking time: 5–7 hours
-
Habitat: Alpine desert
-
Overnight: Kibo Hut
Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut / Marangu Gate
The summit day begins around midnight. After a light snack and preparation, begin the challenging ascent toward Gilman's Point on the crater rim.
From Gilman's Point, continue along the crater rim toward Stella Point and then onward to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at approximately 5,895 m. After spending a short time at the summit taking photographs and enjoying the views, begin the descent.
Descend back toward Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing toward Horombo Hut. Because the summit day is extremely long and demanding, the exact stopping point and final descent arrangements should be confirmed with the trekking operator. A conventional 4-day Marangu schedule is particularly strenuous and provides limited acclimatization.
-
Kibo Hut: 4,700 m
-
Uhuru Peak: 5,895 m
-
Summit ascent: Approximately 6–8 hours
-
Descent: Several additional hours
-
Habitat: Alpine desert and summit zone
