Machame 6-Day Kilimanjaro Summit Climb
Overview
Six days on Mount Kilimanjaro can take you from the shade of a tropical forest to the icy heights of Africa’s tallest mountain. The Machame 6-Day Kilimanjaro Summit Climb follows a beautiful trail on the mountain’s southwestern side, offering changing scenery, rewarding walks, and a real sense of adventure.
The journey begins at Machame Gate, where the first trail winds through thick rainforest. As the days pass, the trees give way to open slopes, unusual mountain plants, and wide views across the Shira Plateau. You’ll visit the Lava Tower area, climb the rocky Barranco Wall, and cross Karanga Valley before reaching Barafu Camp, where the final summit attempt begins.
One of the most memorable moments comes during the early hours of the fifth day, when you’ll walk beneath the stars toward Uhuru Peak, standing 5,895 meters above sea level. Reaching the summit depends on your health, acclimatization, and mountain conditions.
This six-day climb is a demanding option for fit travelers who are ready for long walks and changing weather. With experienced local guides and a mountain support team, you’ll have help throughout the journey, from your first steps on the trail to your return to Moshi.

Is This the Right Climb for You?
The Machame six-day climb is best for travelers who are comfortable walking for several hours and want a physically demanding mountain experience. The route does not require technical mountaineering skills, but it includes steep paths, rocky sections, and a long summit day.
Because the schedule is relatively short, it provides less time to adjust to altitude than the seven-day Machame Route. If your travel plans allow an extra day, the seven-day option is generally preferable for acclimatization.

Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Elevation: 1,800 m to 2,835 m
The day begins with a drive from Moshi to Machame Gate. After registration and a briefing, you'll enter the rainforest, where the trail passes beneath tall trees and through thick green vegetation. The steady uphill walk gives you time to settle into the rhythm of the mountain. Birds are often heard in the forest, and monkeys may occasionally appear along the way. By afternoon, you'll reach Machame Camp, where dinner and your first night in a tent await.
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Elevation: 2,835 m to 3,750 m
Today's climb takes you beyond the forest and onto the open mountain slopes. The path becomes rockier, with steeper sections that require a slower pace. As the vegetation changes, you'll begin to see more of Kilimanjaro's upper slopes and the valleys below. The walk ends at Shira Camp, where you can spend the afternoon resting, taking photographs, and enjoying the open scenery.
Higher Ground: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
Elevation: 3,750 m to 4,630 m, then down to 3,900 m
Leaving Shira Camp, you'll follow a trail toward Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation surrounded by rocky terrain. The climb reaches approximately 4,630 meters before descending into Barranco Valley. This change in elevation is an important part of the acclimatization schedule, although altitude sickness remains a risk. On the descent, you'll pass unusual giant groundsels before arriving at Barranco Camp, with the famous Barranco Wall rising nearby.
Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 3,900 m to 4,673 m
The morning starts with the climb up Barranco Wall. Some sections are steep and require using your hands for balance, but your guide will help you find the safest way through. Once at the top, the trail continues across ridges and down into Karanga Valley. From there, you'll climb toward Barafu Camp. Unlike the seven-day itinerary, this six-day route passes Karanga without an overnight stay. At Barafu, you'll eat early, prepare your summit clothing, and rest before the nighttime ascent.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp
Elevation: 4,673 m to 5,895 m, then down to 3,100 m
Your summit attempt usually begins around midnight. Wearing warm layers and headlamps, you'll follow your guide up the steep volcanic slopes toward Stella Point. The cold, thin air, and loose ground make this the hardest part of the trek. If you're feeling well and conditions allow, you'll continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. After a short stop for photographs and celebration, you'll descend to Barafu Camp for a rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 3,100 m to 1,640 m
After breakfast, you'll follow the descending trail through the rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The air becomes warmer as you move downhill, and the green surroundings are a welcome change after the rocky upper mountain. Once at the gate, you'll complete the park exit procedures and collect a climbing certificate if eligible. A vehicle will then take you back to Moshi, bringing your Kilimanjaro adventure to an end.
