Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Distance: 11 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Tropical rainforest
Meals: Lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Machame Camp
The adventure begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. After meeting the mountain team, you will drive to Machame Gate, where the guides handle park registration and make sure everything is ready for the climb.
Once the formalities are complete, your first steps on Kilimanjaro take you into a beautiful tropical rainforest. The trail winds through tall trees, thick vegetation, and peaceful surroundings filled with the sounds of birds. If you are lucky, you may even spot colobus monkeys moving through the branches.
The path climbs steadily, giving you time to settle into a comfortable walking pace. After several hours, you will reach Machame Camp, where the support team will have prepared your tents and a warm evening meal. This first night on the mountain is a chance to relax, get to know your fellow climbers, and prepare for the days ahead.
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Shira Camp
After breakfast, you will leave Machame Camp and continue climbing toward the Shira Plateau. The rainforest gradually disappears, replaced by open moorland, rocky paths, and wide mountain views.
Although today's walk is shorter, some sections are steep and require a steady pace. As you gain altitude, you will notice how dramatically the landscape changes. On clear days, the views stretch across the surrounding valleys, with Mount Meru visible in the distance.
By the time you reach Shira Camp, the mountain feels very different from the forest you walked through the previous day. The afternoon is yours to rest, enjoy the scenery, and spend time with the mountain team before dinner.
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Highest Point: Lava Tower – approximately 4,630 m
Ending Elevation: Approximately 3,900 m
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert and moorland
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Barranco Camp
Today is one of the most interesting days of the climb, both for the scenery and for acclimatization. After breakfast, you will follow the trail toward Lava Tower, a remarkable volcanic rock formation standing high above the surrounding landscape.
The air becomes thinner as you climb, so your guide will encourage a slow and comfortable pace. Reaching the Lava Tower area gives your body some exposure to higher altitude before you descend to Barranco Camp, where you will spend the night.
The descent takes you into the beautiful Barranco Valley, home to unusual giant groundsels and other plants adapted to the mountain environment. As you approach camp, the impressive Barranco Wall comes into view.
You will spend the evening at Barranco Camp, surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery and looking forward to the next day's adventure.
Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
Distance: 9 km
Hiking Time: 7–9 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Barafu Camp
The day begins with one of the Machame Route's most memorable experiences: climbing the Barranco Wall. From below, the wall looks intimidating, but your guides will help you navigate its rocky sections carefully. Some places require using your hands for balance, adding a sense of adventure to the morning
After reaching the top, you will enjoy beautiful views before continuing across the mountain's rocky terrain. The trail passes through Karanga Valley and climbs toward Barafu Camp.
By the time you arrive at Barafu, the landscape is dry, rugged, and exposed. This is the final campsite before the summit attempt, so the atmosphere is often filled with a mixture of excitement and anticipation.
After an early meal, your guide will explain the summit plan and help you prepare your clothing and equipment. You will then have time to rest before beginning the final climb later that night.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then Mweka Camp
Summit Elevation: Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m
Ending Elevation: Approximately 3,100 m
Distance: Approximately 17 km
Hiking Time: 12–16 hours
Habitat: Summit zone and upper moorland
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Mweka Camp
Summit day is the most challenging and rewarding part of the journey. The climb normally begins around midnight, when you leave Barafu Camp wearing warm layers and using a headlamp to follow the trail.
Step by step, you will make your way up the steep slopes toward Stella Point. The cold temperatures, darkness, and high altitude make this section physically demanding, but your guides will help you maintain a careful pace and monitor how you are feeling.
After reaching Stella Point, the trail follows the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak. If the weather is clear and your timing is right, the sunrise can reveal spectacular views of Kilimanjaro's glaciers, volcanic landscape, and clouds far below.
Standing at Uhuru Peak, 5,895 meters above sea level, is an unforgettable achievement for those who reach it. There will usually be time for a few photographs before beginning the long descent.
You will return to Barafu Camp for a short rest and meal before continuing down to Mweka Camp, where a well-deserved dinner and night's sleep await.
Your safety remains the priority throughout the summit attempt. If altitude sickness, severe weather, or another concern makes continuing unsafe, your guide may recommend turning back.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi or Arusha
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Tropical rainforest
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Accommodation: Hotel by separate arrangement
After breakfast, you will begin your final walk down through Kilimanjaro's rainforest. The air becomes warmer as you lose altitude, and the trail once again passes through lush green vegetation.
The descent offers a peaceful opportunity to reflect on the adventure, share stories with fellow trekkers, and appreciate the beautiful surroundings one last time.
Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you will complete the park exit procedures. Eligible climbers receive certificates recognizing the officially recorded summit point they reached.
Your driver will then transfer you back to Moshi or Arusha, where you can enjoy a shower, a comfortable rest, and the satisfaction of completing an incredible mountain journey.
