6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Itinerary
Overview
The 6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Itinerary is a beautiful and challenging journey to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain at 5,895 meters. Known as the Whiskey Route, Machame is one of the most popular ways to climb Kilimanjaro because of its breathtaking scenery, changing landscapes, and exciting trekking trails.
The adventure begins at Machame Gate, where the trail leads through a lush rainforest before opening into the rocky hills, wide valleys, and high-altitude landscapes of Kilimanjaro. Along the way, climbers cross the famous Shira Plateau, visit Lava Tower, tackle the Barranco Wall, and make their final climb to Uhuru Peak.
What makes this route special is that every day brings something different. One morning, you may be walking beneath tall rainforest trees, and the next, enjoying incredible views of Kibo Peak above the clouds.
The six-day Machame Route is best for physically fit trekkers who are ready for long hiking days. It is more demanding than the seven-day option because it allows less time to adjust to the altitude. With good preparation, experienced guides, and a steady walking pace, it offers an unforgettable mountain adventure.

Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Distance: Approximately 11 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
The adventure starts with a morning pickup from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. After a scenic drive to Machame Gate, the mountain guides will help with park registration and make sure everything is ready before the trek begins.
The first part of the trail takes you through Kilimanjaro's beautiful rainforest. Tall trees, thick green vegetation, and the sounds of birds make this a peaceful introduction to the mountain. If you are lucky, you may even spot monkeys moving through the trees.
The path gradually climbs uphill and can become muddy, especially after rain. There is no need to rush. Your guide will encourage a comfortable walking pace, giving you time to enjoy the forest and adjust to the climb.
By late afternoon, you will reach Machame Camp, where the mountain crew will have prepared your tents. After dinner, settle in for your first night on Kilimanjaro.
Meals: Lunch and Dinner
Overnight: Machame Camp
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Distance: Approximately 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
After breakfast, leave Machame Camp and continue climbing toward Shira Camp. The scenery begins to change as the thick rainforest gives way to smaller trees, bushes, and open moorland.
Although today's walk is shorter than the previous day, some sections are steep and rocky. As you climb higher, the views become more impressive, with beautiful valleys stretching below and Mount Meru sometimes visible in the distance.
The trail eventually leads onto the Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic parts of Kilimanjaro. On a clear day, you can enjoy wonderful views of Kibo Peak rising above the surrounding landscape.
You will arrive at Shira Camp with time to relax, take photographs, and enjoy the fresh mountain air. Your guide will also check how you are feeling as you continue adjusting to the altitude.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Overnight: Shira Camp
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Today's hike is one of the most important parts of the journey because it gives your body an opportunity to adjust to higher elevations.
After breakfast, begin walking toward Lava Tower, a large volcanic rock formation standing at approximately 4,630 meters. As you climb, the landscape becomes increasingly dry and rocky, with fewer plants growing along the trail.
The higher altitude may make walking feel more difficult, so the group will move slowly and take regular breaks. After reaching the Lava Tower area, begin descending toward Barranco Valley.
The descent brings a welcome change in scenery. Along the way, you may see giant groundsels and other unusual plants that survive in Kilimanjaro's harsh mountain environment.
By afternoon, arrive at Barranco Camp, located beneath the impressive Barranco Wall. This is one of the most beautiful campsites on the route, with dramatic mountain views and a peaceful atmosphere.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp via Karanga
Distance: Approximately 9 km
Hiking Time: 7–9 hours
The morning begins with one of the most exciting sections of the Machame Route: climbing the famous Barranco Wall.
Although the wall looks intimidating from below, it is a manageable scramble for many prepared trekkers. Your guide will show you where to place your hands and feet while helping you move safely through the rocky sections.
Once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with incredible views of the surrounding valleys and the mountain's glaciers.
Continue across a series of ridges before descending into Karanga Valley. After climbing out of the valley, pass Karanga Camp and continue toward Barafu Camp.
This is a long and demanding day because the six-day itinerary combines two trekking stages into one. By the time you reach Barafu Camp, you will be high on the mountain, surrounded by a rugged and rocky landscape.
After an early dinner, your guide will explain the summit plan and help you prepare your warm clothing, headlamp, and essential equipment. Try to get some rest because the final climb begins around midnight.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then Mweka Camp
Distance: Approximately 17 km
Hiking Time: 12–16 hours
Summit day is the most challenging and memorable part of the entire adventure.
The climb usually begins around midnight when the mountain is dark and temperatures are extremely cold. Wearing warm layers and using headlamps, the group slowly makes its way uphill toward Stella Point.
The trail is steep, and the thin air makes every step feel harder. Your guide will encourage a slow, steady pace, with breaks when needed. This is where patience and determination become especially important.
After several hours of climbing, you will reach Stella Point on the crater rim at approximately 5,756 meters. From here, the trail continues toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
Reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters is an incredible moment. If the weather and your condition allow, you will have time to take photographs, enjoy the views, and celebrate your achievement with the mountain team.
After the summit, begin descending to Barafu Camp for a short rest and something to eat. The journey then continues down to Mweka Camp, where you can finally relax after a long day on the mountain.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi or Arusha
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
After breakfast, begin your final walk down Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail takes you back through the rainforest, where the air becomes warmer and the surroundings turn green again.
The descent is generally easier than the previous day's hiking, although the path can be slippery, particularly after rainfall. Take your time and enjoy the last moments of the mountain experience.
When you arrive at Mweka Gate, complete the park exit procedures and receive your climbing certificate if you reached a qualifying summit point.
After saying goodbye to the mountain crew, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
Your Kilimanjaro adventure comes to an end, leaving you with wonderful memories, new friendships, and the satisfaction of completing one of Africa's most remarkable trekking journeys.
Meals: Breakfast and Lunch
Accommodation: Hotel after the trek, if included in your booking.
