6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Summit Adventure
Overview
Experience the beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro on a six-day journey along the Machame Route, one of the mountain’s most rewarding trails. This adventure is about more than reaching the top. It’s about discovering new landscapes, challenging yourself, meeting local mountain guides, and enjoying the small moments that make a climb memorable.
The journey starts in the green forests on Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes and gradually moves into open grasslands, rocky valleys, and the quiet mountain wilderness. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the Shira Plateau, walk beneath the impressive Lava Tower, and make your way up the famous Barranco Wall.
As the climb continues, the scenery becomes more rugged and the air thinner. Your biggest challenge comes on summit night, when you’ll set out toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters.
This six-day adventure is ideal for travelers who enjoy outdoor challenges and have prepared themselves for several days of hiking. Because the itinerary has less time for acclimatization than the seven-day Machame Route, good fitness and careful attention to altitude are especially important.
With Kilinge Adventures, you’ll have a local mountain team to guide you along the trails, prepare your camps, and support you throughout the journey.

Who Is This Climb Best For?
The six-day Machame Route is a good choice for travelers who enjoy hiking, have a reasonable level of fitness, and are ready for a physical challenge.
You don’t need technical climbing experience, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours each day, including steep and uneven sections.
The summit attempt is particularly demanding because of the cold, altitude, and long walking hours.
If you would prefer a little more time to adjust to the mountain, the seven-day Machame Route is generally a better option.
Best Time to Climb
| Months | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| January – February | Often clearer weather and relatively dry trails |
| March – May | More rainfall and muddy paths |
| June – October | Generally drier conditions and popular trekking months |
| November – December | Occasional heavy rain and changing weather |
However, Kilimanjaro’s weather can change at any time, so proper clothing and preparation are essential throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a beginner climb the six-day Machame Route?
Yes, a fit beginner can attempt the climb with proper preparation. However, the six-day itinerary is challenging and has less time for acclimatization than the seven-day option.
Is Uhuru Peak included in the itinerary?
Yes. The summit attempt takes place on Day 5, but reaching the peak depends on your health, weather conditions, and how well your body adjusts to the altitude.
Do I need technical climbing skills?
No. The Machame Route is a trekking route, although some sections, especially Barranco Wall, require careful movement over rocks.
Where will I sleep during the climb?
You’ll stay in tents at designated campsites along the route. Your mountain crew will help with campsite arrangements.
Which day is the hardest?
Day 5 is usually the toughest because you’ll climb toward the summit during the night and then descend to Mweka Camp.
Is the six-day Machame Route better than the seven-day route?
Both follow much of the same trail, but the seven-day option gives you more time to adjust to the altitude and is generally preferable for acclimatization.

Moshi to Machame Gate – Machame Camp
Distance: Approximately 11 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Accommodation: Machame Camp
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a morning pickup in Moshi. After meeting your mountain team, you'll drive to Machame Gate, where your guide will help with park registration and the final preparations for the climb.
Once everything is ready, you'll begin walking through the rainforest. The path is surrounded by tall trees, thick vegetation, and the sounds of birds. You may even see monkeys moving through the branches if you're lucky.
The walk is mostly uphill, but there's no need to rush. Your guide will help you find a comfortable pace, with breaks whenever needed. As you move higher, the air becomes cooler and the forest gradually begins to change.
By the afternoon, you'll reach Machame Camp, where your tents and a warm meal will be waiting. After dinner, you can relax and enjoy your first night on the mountain.
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Distance: Approximately 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Accommodation: Shira Camp
After breakfast, you'll leave Machame Camp and continue climbing toward the Shira Plateau. The trail becomes steeper in places, but the changing views make the effort worthwhile.
The thick forest from the previous day slowly disappears, giving way to smaller plants, open slopes, and rocky paths. On a clear day, you'll enjoy wonderful views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding valleys.
Although today's walk is shorter, you'll gain a considerable amount of altitude. Your guide will encourage you to walk slowly, take regular breaks, and drink enough water.
When you arrive at Shira Camp, you'll have the rest of the afternoon to rest, take photographs, and enjoy the wide-open mountain scenery. As evening approaches, the temperature drops, so you'll want to put on warm clothing before dinner.
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Accommodation: Barranco Camp
Today brings a completely different experience as you leave the open Shira landscape and head toward Lava Tower.
The trail gradually climbs into a rocky area where there are fewer plants and the mountain feels more remote. Along the way, you'll have plenty of opportunities to admire the surrounding peaks and take short breaks.
You'll reach the Lava Tower area at around 4,630 meters before descending toward Barranco Camp. This climb-high, sleep-low approach gives your body an opportunity to adjust to the altitude, although altitude sickness can still occur.
The walk down into Barranco Valley is especially beautiful. You'll pass unusual giant groundsels and enjoy views of the steep mountain walls surrounding the valley.
By the time you reach Barranco Camp, you'll see the famous Barranco Wall rising above the campsite. After a long day of hiking, enjoy dinner and get some rest before tomorrow's climb.
Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp via Karanga Valley
Distance: Approximately 9 km
Hiking Time: 7–9 hours
Accommodation: Barafu Camp
You'll begin the morning with one of the most exciting parts of the Machame Route: the Barranco Wall.
From below, the wall looks steep and challenging, but your guide will show you how to move safely along the rocky sections. At certain points, you'll need to use your hands for balance as you make your way upward.
Once you reach the top, take a moment to enjoy the views before continuing across the mountain ridges toward Karanga Valley.
After crossing the valley, the trail climbs again toward Barafu Camp. This section can feel tiring because you'll already have spent several hours walking at high altitude.
Unlike the seven-day Machame itinerary, the six-day route doesn't include an overnight stay at Karanga Camp. You'll continue directly to Barafu, where you'll prepare for the summit attempt.
After arriving, enjoy an early meal, organize your warm clothing and headlamp, and try to get some sleep. You'll be waking up late at night for the final climb toward Uhuru Peak.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
Distance: Approximately 17 km
Hiking Time: 12–16 hours
Accommodation: Mweka Camp
This is the biggest day of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
You'll usually begin the summit climb around midnight, walking slowly through the darkness with your headlamp lighting the trail. The temperature can be extremely cold, and the thin air makes the climb more difficult.
Your guide will help you maintain a steady pace as you make your way toward Stella Point on the crater rim. Every step takes effort, but as the sky begins to brighten, the mountain scenery becomes even more impressive.
If conditions are suitable and you're feeling well enough to continue, you'll follow the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, standing 5,895 meters above sea level.
Reaching the summit is an incredible moment. You'll have a short opportunity to take photographs, enjoy the views, and celebrate with your mountain team.
Afterward, you'll descend to Barafu Camp for a brief rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp. It's a long and tiring day, but reaching the lower campsite brings welcome relief from the extreme altitude.
Enjoy dinner and a well-earned night's sleep.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Destination: Moshi
After breakfast, you'll begin your final walk down Kilimanjaro.
The trail takes you back into the rainforest, where the air is warmer and the surroundings become green again. You may hear birds calling from the trees or spot wildlife along the path.
Although most of the walking is downhill, some sections can be slippery, especially after rain, so it's important to take your time.
At Mweka Gate, you'll complete the park exit procedures and receive a climbing certificate if you've met the requirements.
Your driver will then take you back to Moshi, where you can enjoy a hot shower, a comfortable meal, and some well-deserved rest.
Your mountain adventure may be over, but the experience and memories will stay with you for years.
