Mount Kilimanjaro Machame Route 6 Days Guided Trek
Overview
Discover the beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro on a six-day journey along the Machame Route, one of the most scenic ways to explore Africa’s highest mountain. This adventure takes you from the green forests at the foot of Kilimanjaro to the open mountain slopes, rocky valleys, and breathtaking heights of Uhuru Peak.
The Mount Kilimanjaro Machame Route 6 Days Guided Trek is a great choice for travelers who love nature, enjoy walking, and want to challenge themselves in a truly special setting. Along the way, you’ll explore the wide Shira Plateau, pass the impressive Lava Tower, and climb the famous Barranco Wall with the help of experienced local guides.
Each day offers something new. You’ll notice how the plants become smaller as you climb higher, how the temperature changes, and how the views open up across the surrounding valleys. Your mountain team will help with meals, camping arrangements, and daily guidance so you can concentrate on the experience.
The most exciting part of the journey is the summit attempt, when you’ll set out during the night toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. Reaching the top depends on the weather, your health, and how well your body adjusts to the altitude.
This six-day itinerary is best for fit, well-prepared hikers. If you would like more time to acclimatize, the seven-day Machame Route is generally a better option.

No technical climbing experience is required, but good fitness and previous hiking experience are helpful.
Will I reach Uhuru Peak?
The trek includes a summit attempt on Day 5. Reaching the peak depends on your health, weather, and altitude adaptation.
Where will I sleep?
You’ll stay in camping tents at designated mountain campsites throughout the climb.
What is the most difficult day?
Day 5 is usually the hardest because it includes the overnight summit climb and a long descent to Mweka Camp.

Moshi – Machame Gate – Machame Camp
Distance: Approximately 11 km
Walking Time: 5–7 hours
Overnight: Machame Camp
Your adventure begins with a morning pickup from Moshi and a drive to Machame Gate. Here, you'll meet your mountain team, complete the park registration, and get ready for your first day of hiking.
The trail starts in a beautiful rainforest, where tall trees provide shade and the air feels fresh and cool. As you walk, you may hear birds calling or see monkeys moving through the branches. The path climbs gradually, giving you time to settle into a comfortable walking pace.
After several hours, you'll arrive at Machame Camp. Your crew will prepare a warm meal while you settle into your tent and enjoy your first evening on Kilimanjaro.
Machame Camp – Shira Camp
Distance: Approximately 5 km
Walking Time: 4–6 hours
Overnight: Shira Camp
Wake up to the fresh mountain air and enjoy breakfast before continuing your climb. Today's trail is shorter, but some sections are steeper as you leave the rainforest behind.
The surroundings gradually change from tall trees to smaller shrubs, rocky paths, and open mountain slopes. As you gain height, you'll begin to enjoy wider views of the valleys below and Kibo Peak above.
On clear days, the scenery is especially beautiful, and there will be opportunities to stop for photographs along the way.
You'll reach Shira Camp with time to rest and enjoy the surroundings. Since you're now sleeping at a higher altitude, your guide will encourage you to take things slowly, drink enough water, and pay attention to how you're feeling.
Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Walking Time: 6–8 hours
Overnight: Barranco Camp
After breakfast, you'll begin walking toward Lava Tower, one of the most recognizable rock formations on Kilimanjaro.
The trail becomes more open and rocky, with fewer plants as you move higher. You'll notice the air getting thinner, so walking slowly and taking regular breaks becomes increasingly important.
At Lava Tower, you'll reach approximately 4,630 meters before heading downhill toward Barranco Camp. This change in elevation helps your body adapt to the mountain, although it doesn't remove the risk of altitude sickness.
The descent into Barranco Valley is a lovely part of the day. You'll pass unusual giant groundsels and enjoy views of the surrounding cliffs.
When you arrive at Barranco Camp, you'll see the impressive Barranco Wall rising above the campsite. After dinner, you can rest and prepare for the next day's climb.
Barranco Camp – Karanga Valley – Barafu Camp
Distance: Approximately 9 km
Walking Time: 7–9 hours
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Today begins with the famous Barranco Wall, one of the most memorable parts of the Machame Route.
Although the wall looks steep from below, your guide will help you find your way across the rocky sections. At some points, you'll use your hands for balance as you climb upward.
Once you reach the top, you'll have time to enjoy the views before continuing across the mountain ridges and down into Karanga Valley.
After crossing the valley, the trail climbs again toward Barafu Camp. This is a long day of walking, especially because the six-day itinerary doesn't include an overnight stop at Karanga.
By the time you arrive at Barafu, you'll be close to the final summit attempt. Your team will prepare an early meal, and your guide will explain what to expect during the night.
You'll then organize your warm clothing, headlamp, and other essentials before resting for a few hours.
Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
Distance: Approximately 17 km
Walking Time: 12–16 hours
Overnight: Mweka Camp
This is the day you've been working toward since the beginning of your climb.
You'll normally leave Barafu Camp around midnight, following your guide slowly up the mountain under the light of your headlamp. The air is thin, temperatures are very cold, and the trail can feel demanding.
As you continue climbing, you'll make your way toward Stella Point on the crater rim. If the weather is clear, you may see the first light of sunrise spreading across the mountain.
From Stella Point, you'll continue toward Uhuru Peak if your guide confirms that conditions are safe and you're feeling well enough to continue.
Standing at 5,895 meters is a special achievement. You'll have a short time to take photographs and enjoy the views before beginning the descent.
You'll return to Barafu Camp for a brief rest and then continue down to Mweka Camp, where you'll enjoy dinner and a well-earned night's sleep.
Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Walking Time: 3–4 hours
Destination: Moshi
After breakfast, you'll begin your final walk down the mountain.
The trail takes you through the rainforest again, where the air is warmer and the surroundings are filled with green vegetation. You may hear birds singing or spot monkeys along the way.
Although most of the trail is downhill, it can be slippery after rain, so you'll need to walk carefully.
At Mweka Gate, you'll complete the park exit procedures and receive a climbing certificate if you've met the requirements.
Your driver will then take you back to Moshi, where you can relax and celebrate the end of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
