Marangu Route 4 days short climb
4 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek via the Marangu Route
Experience the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, on our 4 Days Marangu Route Short Climb.
The Marangu Route is one of the most established routes on Kilimanjaro and is popularly known as the “Coca-Cola Route.” Unlike most other Kilimanjaro routes, Marangu provides overnight accommodation in mountain huts rather than tents.
This short itinerary takes you from the lush rainforest on the lower slopes to the high-altitude alpine environment before attempting the summit of Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet).
The four-day schedule is designed for travelers with limited time. However, because the itinerary allows less time for acclimatization than longer Kilimanjaro programs, it is a physically demanding climb and requires good preparation.

Best Time for the 4-Day Marangu Route
Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout much of the year, but many trekkers prefer the relatively drier periods.
January–February: Generally warmer conditions and a popular period for climbing.
June–October: A commonly preferred dry-season period with generally favorable trekking conditions.
November–December: Short rains may occur, although trekking remains possible.
March–May: The longer rainy period can bring wetter trail conditions and reduced visibility.
Mountain weather can change rapidly at any time of year, so appropriate waterproof and warm clothing is essential.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 4-day Marangu Route suitable for beginners?
The route is accessible to trekkers with varying levels of experience, but the 4-day schedule is demanding because of the limited acclimatization time. Beginners should prepare thoroughly and discuss their suitability with a qualified trekking operator.
Is Marangu called the Coca-Cola Route?
Yes. Marangu is widely known by the nickname Coca-Cola Route.
Do I sleep in tents?
No. Marangu uses mountain huts at the designated overnight stops.
How long is summit day?
The summit day is the longest and most demanding day of the itinerary. Depending on individual pace and conditions, the complete summit ascent and descent can take many hours.
What happens if I cannot reach Uhuru Peak?
Your guide will prioritize your safety. If altitude symptoms, exhaustion, weather, or another safety concern makes continuing inappropriate, you may be advised to turn around. Reaching a lower point safely is always more important than reaching the summit.
Do I need travel insurance?
Appropriate travel insurance is strongly recommended. Make sure your policy covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation at the altitude reached during your trip.

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Elevation: 1,860 m to 2,720 m Distance: Approximately 8 km Trekking Time: 4–5 hours Habitat: Rainforest
Your adventure begins with a transfer to Marangu Gate, where you complete registration and park entry procedures.
From the gate, the trail enters the lush montane rainforest. The route is surrounded by tall trees, dense vegetation, birds, and the characteristic atmosphere of Kilimanjaro's lower slopes.
The trail gradually climbs through the forest toward Mandara Hut.
After reaching the hut, you can relax, enjoy dinner, and recover from the day's trek. Your guide will brief you about the following day's route and help you prepare for the increasing altitude.
Overnight: Mandara Hut Meals: Lunch and dinner
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 2,720 m to 3,720 m Distance: Approximately 12 km Trekking Time: 6–8 hours Habitat: Moorland
After breakfast, you leave the rainforest and continue into the open moorland zone.
The scenery changes noticeably as you climb. The dense forest gives way to grasses, shrubs, giant heathers, and wide mountain views.
Weather permitting, you may see Kibo Peak and Mawenzi Peak rising above the surrounding landscape.
The trail continues steadily toward Horombo Hut, situated at approximately 3,720 metres.
Because you are gaining altitude relatively quickly on this short itinerary, maintaining a slow pace and staying properly hydrated are particularly important.
Overnight: Horombo Hut Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Elevation: 3,720 m to 4,703 m Distance: Approximately 9–10 km Trekking Time: 6–8 hours Habitat: Alpine desert
Today you leave Horombo and continue toward Kibo Hut, the final overnight stop before the summit attempt.
The trail crosses the broad alpine landscape known as the Saddle, located between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.
Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you climb, and the environment becomes colder and more rugged.
Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, you have time to rest and prepare for the summit attempt. Dinner is usually served early, followed by a briefing from your guide.
The summit climb begins during the night, so getting as much rest as possible is essential.
Overnight: Kibo Hut Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut
Kibo Hut: 4,703 m Uhuru Peak: 5,895 m Trekking Time: Approximately 12–15+ hours Habitat: Alpine desert and moorland
The final day begins around midnight.
After a light meal or snack, you start the summit climb in darkness. The trail rises gradually over steep and rocky terrain toward the crater rim.
Your guide will set a slow and steady pace because the altitude makes even simple physical activity significantly more demanding.
You continue toward the crater rim and onward to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro.
Uhuru Peak – 5,895 Metres
Reaching Uhuru Peak is the defining moment of the journey.
After trekking from the rainforest through the moorland and high alpine desert, you finally arrive at the Roof of Africa.
Take photographs, celebrate your achievement, and enjoy the surrounding scenery before beginning the descent.
The descent takes you back toward Kibo Hut, where you have a short rest before continuing to Horombo Hut.
Overnight: Horombo Hut Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
