Marangu Route 4 days guided trek
Overview
The 4-Day Marangu Route Guided Trek offers an unforgettable journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain at 5,895 metres. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route where trekkers stay in permanent mountain huts rather than camping in tents.
This guided trek takes you through several distinct ecological zones, from the lush montane rainforest to the moorland, alpine desert and high-altitude summit zone. Throughout the journey, you are accompanied by an experienced mountain guide who provides route guidance, safety support and practical assistance as you adjust to increasing altitude.
The 4-day itinerary is a relatively fast ascent, making it important for trekkers to arrive well prepared and physically fit. For those with additional time, an extra acclimatization day is recommended.

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Altitude: 1,860 m to 2,720 m Distance: Approximately 8 km Trekking Time: 3–5 hours Habitat: Montane Rainforest Accommodation: Mandara Hut Meals: Lunch and Dinner
Your adventure begins with a transfer from your hotel in Moshi to Marangu Gate. After completing registration and park formalities, you meet your mountain guide and begin the trek through the lush rainforest.
The trail winds beneath a dense canopy of tropical vegetation, offering opportunities to observe native birdlife and monkeys. Your guide sets a comfortable pace and helps you settle into the rhythm of high-altitude trekking.
After reaching Mandara Hut, you will check into your shared mountain accommodation, enjoy dinner and rest for the night.
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Altitude: 2,720 m to 3,720 m Distance: Approximately 12 km Trekking Time: 5–7 hours Habitat: Moorland Accommodation: Horombo Hut Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
After breakfast, the trail leaves the rainforest and enters the open moorland zone. The landscape changes noticeably, with expansive views and distinctive high-altitude vegetation.
The route continues gradually uphill toward Horombo Hut, with views of the dramatic Kibo and Mawenzi volcanic peaks. Your guide monitors your pace and general condition throughout the day.
At Horombo, you will settle into the mountain huts, enjoy dinner and prepare for the next stage of the ascent.
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Altitude: 3,720 m to 4,703 m Distance: Approximately 9 km Trekking Time: 5–7 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert Accommodation: Kibo Hut Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Today, you enter the high alpine desert as the trail crosses the broad saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks.
The environment becomes increasingly rugged and vegetation becomes sparse. Your guide maintains a steady, manageable pace as you gradually gain elevation.
Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, you will have an early dinner and prepare for the summit attempt. Because the summit climb begins around midnight, an early rest is essential.
Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Marangu Gate
Kibo Hut: 4,703 m Uhuru Peak: 5,895 m Trekking Time: Approximately 12–16 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert and Arctic Zone Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
The most challenging and rewarding day begins around midnight.
Your guide leads you slowly through the darkness toward the crater rim. The ascent is steep and demanding, with cold temperatures and reduced oxygen at altitude. The team proceeds at a controlled pace, allowing regular breaks when necessary.
After reaching the crater rim at Gilman's Point, the route continues toward Stella Point and onward to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
At the summit, take time to celebrate your achievement and enjoy the extraordinary views, weather permitting.
The descent then begins toward Kibo Hut, where you take a short rest before continuing to Horombo Hut and eventually descending through the rainforest to Marangu Gate.
