Mount Meru 4 Days Itinerary

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

The Mount Meru trek begins at Momella Gate inside Arusha National Park. After registration and preparation, the trail enters the lower mountain environment and passes through open areas and montane forest. Wildlife may be encountered along the lower sections, and the route gradually gains elevation toward Miriakamba Hut.

Overnight: Miriakamba Hut

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

Continue ascending from Miriakamba Hut toward Saddle Hut. The trail follows a steeper section through forest and higher vegetation as the landscape becomes more open. The route provides views of the Meru crater and surrounding mountain environment. An optional acclimatization walk toward Little Meru may be possible depending on conditions and the trekking schedule.

Overnight: Saddle Hut

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Mount Meru Summit and Miriakamba Hut

The summit attempt begins early, usually around midnight or in the early morning. The trail climbs toward Rhino Point and Cobra Point before continuing along the rocky ridge toward Socialist Peak, the summit of Mount Meru at approximately 4,566 metres. After spending time at the summit area, descend toward Saddle Hut and continue to Miriakamba Hut.

Overnight: Miriakamba Hut

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate

After breakfast, begin the final descent from Miriakamba Hut toward Momella Gate. The trail passes back through the forest and lower mountain environment as elevation decreases. Upon reaching the park gate, the Mount Meru section is completed and transfer can continue toward Arusha or Moshi.

Activity: Final descent and transfer

End of Meru Section: Momella Gate / Arusha area

Marangu Route 5 Days Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

The Marangu Route begins at Marangu Gate and enters the montane rainforest. The trail gradually climbs through dense forest vegetation toward Mandara Hut. The lower section can be humid and sometimes muddy, while the surrounding forest provides a gradual introduction to the mountain environment.

Overnight: Mandara Hut

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Continue from Mandara Hut through the upper forest and into the heath and moorland zone. The landscape becomes more open as the route gains elevation toward Horombo Hut, with views of Mawenzi and Kibo often visible in clear weather.

Overnight: Horombo Hut

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

The trek continues across the upper moorland toward the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as the route enters the alpine desert environment. The day ends at Kibo Hut, where trekkers rest and prepare for the summit attempt.

Overnight: Kibo Hut

Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Horombo Hut

The summit attempt begins very early, generally around midnight or in the early morning. The trail climbs through steep high-altitude terrain toward Gilman's Point on the crater rim and continues toward Uhuru Peak at approximately 5,895 metres above sea level. After the summit section, descend toward Kibo Hut and continue to Horombo Hut.

Overnight: Horombo Hut

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

After breakfast, begin the final descent through the moorland and heath zone toward Mandara Hut. Continue downward through the montane rainforest to Marangu Gate, where the five-day Marangu Route trek ends.

End of Marangu Route: Marangu Gate

Mountain Ecological Zones

ZoneGeneral Environment
Montane ForestDense vegetation, forest trails and a variety of plant and animal species at lower elevations.
Heath and MoorlandOpen highland landscapes with distinctive vegetation and cooler conditions.
Alpine DesertSparse vegetation, rocky terrain and increasingly exposed high-altitude conditions.
Summit ZoneCold, exposed and very high-altitude terrain around the upper mountain.

Accommodation

The Marangu Route is known for designated mountain hut accommodation along the route. Mount Meru also uses mountain huts at Miriakamba and Saddle. Facilities are basic compared with conventional hotels and lodges, and exact accommodation arrangements depend on the trekking schedule and applicable park regulations.

Altitude and Safety Considerations

Both Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro involve significant elevation gain. Altitude-related illness can affect individuals differently, and symptoms should be taken seriously. Cold temperatures, exhaustion, dehydration, weather changes and reduced oxygen availability are additional considerations at higher elevations.

A person who becomes unwell at altitude may need to stop ascending or descend. Decisions about continuing should be made with qualified mountain personnel and appropriate medical guidance. Reaching either summit cannot be guaranteed.
