Umbwe Route 8 Days Kilimanjaro Itinerary

The Umbwe Route 8 days Kilimanjaro itinerary is designed for experienced and physically fit climbers who want a steep, remote, and challenging ascent with improved acclimatization. The extra day allows better altitude adaptation, significantly increasing summit success compared to shorter Umbwe itineraries.

This route begins on the quiet Umbwe trail and joins the Machame Route at Barranco Camp, combining adventure with a safer progression to the summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Day 1: Umbwe Gate – Umbwe Cave Camp

  • Elevation: 1,600m – 2,900m

  • Distance: ~11 km

  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

  • Habitat: Rainforest

After registration at Umbwe Gate, begin a steep ascent through dense rainforest. The trail is narrow and direct, making this one of the toughest first days on Kilimanjaro. Enjoy lush vegetation and possible wildlife sightings. Overnight at Umbwe Cave Camp.

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp – Barranco Camp

  • Elevation: 2,900m – 3,900m

  • Distance: ~6 km

  • Hiking Time: 4–6 hours

  • Habitat: Heath & Moorland

Climb along the dramatic Umbwe Ridge with breathtaking views of deep valleys and cliffs. Later descend into the scenic Barranco Valley where the route joins the Machame Route. Overnight at Barranco Camp beneath the iconic Barranco Wall.

Day 3: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

  • Elevation: 3,900m – 4,035m

  • Distance: ~5 km

  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, a fun, non-technical scramble with panoramic views. Continue across ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp, a short day designed to support acclimatization.

Day 4: Karanga Camp – Karanga Acclimatization Day

  • Elevation Gain: 4,035m – ~4,300m (and back)

  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

This extra day is dedicated to acclimatization. Take a short hike toward Barafu Camp and return to Karanga Camp for rest. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy significantly improves summit success and reduces altitude sickness risk.

Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

  • Elevation: 4,035m – 4,673m

  • Distance: ~4 km

  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

A steady ascent leads to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt. The terrain is rocky and barren with expansive views. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit night. Early dinner and sleep.

Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

  • Elevation: 4,673m – 5,895m – 3,100m

  • Distance: ~17 km

  • Hiking Time: 10–14 hours

  • Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest

Summit day begins around midnight. Ascend slowly to Stella Point, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebration, descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue to Mweka Camp.

Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate

  • Elevation: 3,100m – 1,640m

  • Distance: ~10 km

  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

  • Habitat: Rainforest

Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Sign out of the park and receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificates (Green or Gold). Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha.

Day 8: Departure / Optional Activities

After breakfast, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport or continue with optional activities such as a cultural tour, waterfall visit, or safari extension.
