6-Day Serengeti Safari with Balloon Safari

Tarangire, Central Serengeti and Ngorongoro, with private and joining group options from Arusha or Moshi.

See Tanzania from the safari tracks and the open sky. This 6-day Serengeti balloon safari combines Tarangire’s baobab country, three nights on the Serengeti plains and a descent into Ngorongoro Crater. Travel with Kilinge Adventures and request a package that includes a sunrise balloon flight alongside guided wildlife drives.

6 days · 5 nights Three safari destinations Private or joining group Balloon-inclusive quotation

Safari Overview

The journey starts with a wildlife drive in Tarangire before travelling through the Ngorongoro highlands to Central Serengeti. Three consecutive nights here create time for a balloon morning, a full day of wildlife viewing and quieter moments at camp. The final overnight is near Ngorongoro, positioning the trip for a crater visit before returning to Arusha or Moshi.

This is a proposed six-day safari itinerary, with arrival accommodation arranged separately if needed. Choose a private vehicle for a personal pace or ask about a joining group departure for shared travel. Departure dates, accommodation and balloon seats are confirmed in the written quotation.

Tour Highlights

  • Explore Tarangire’s river valleys, baobabs and elephant habitat.
  • Spend three nights in Central Serengeti rather than changing camp daily.
  • Plan a sunrise balloon flight followed by a bush breakfast.
  • Enjoy a full Serengeti game-drive day in addition to the balloon morning.
  • Stay in the highlands before the Ngorongoro Crater visit.
  • Compare private and joining group safari arrangements.

Starting Point and Safari Route

Route: Arusha or Moshi → Tarangire → Karatu → Central Serengeti → Ngorongoro highlands → Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha or Moshi.

Arusha is the main meeting point for this northern circuit route. Starting in Moshi adds road travel, so an earlier departure or an overnight in Arusha may be recommended. For a joining group safari, the Moshi transfer can be separate from the shared safari vehicle. Any extra transfer charge will be shown in the quotation.

Day 2 is a substantial road journey through the highlands and into the Serengeti, with entry formalities and stops. Day 5 is the return transfer to the highlands. Exact driving estimates depend on the booked properties, roads and wildlife stops; they will be confirmed with the final itinerary. Airport transfers and flight connections must be arranged separately unless included in writing.

Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha or Moshi to Tarangire National Park

Meet the safari team at the agreed pickup point and travel to Tarangire. After entry formalities, begin a game drive through baobab-studded landscapes and river habitats. Look for elephants, giraffes, zebra and antelope while the guide explains how water and seasonal movement shape the park. Pause for a picnic lunch at a designated site, then continue wildlife viewing as the day allows. Leave the park and drive to Karatu for dinner and the first overnight. A Moshi start requires an earlier pickup and may reduce time inside the park.

Meals: Lunch and dinner
Overnight: Karatu.

Day 2: Through the Highlands to Central Serengeti

Leave Karatu after breakfast and travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area towards the Serengeti. The scenery changes from highland slopes to open grassland, with stops governed by the route and entry arrangements. This is primarily a transfer day, with lunch along the journey and wildlife viewing after entering the park as time permits. Continue to the Central Serengeti accommodation for dinner. Passing through the conservation area today does not include a crater descent or an Olduvai Gorge visit.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Central Serengeti.

Day 3: Serengeti Sunrise Balloon Safari and Game Drive

Start before dawn with a transfer arranged by the balloon operator. At the launch area, meet the crew and receive the safety briefing before boarding. If conditions permit, take off around sunrise and drift over the plains, following a course determined by the wind. The flight typically lasts about one hour, although weather and safe landing opportunities determine its length. Wildlife below is a possibility rather than a promise. After landing, enjoy the operator’s bush breakfast and meet the safari guide at the agreed location. Allow roughly five hours for the complete experience, including transfers. Continue with a game drive and lunch arrangements suited to the day, returning to camp for dinner. On a shared safari, non-flying guests follow the confirmed ground programme and the reunion is coordinated in advance.

Meals: Bush breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Central Serengeti.

Day 4: A Full Day Exploring Central Serengeti

Spend the day exploring accessible wildlife areas around Central Serengeti with the driver-guide. River edges, open grassland and rocky kopjes offer different habitats, and the route responds to recent sightings and ground conditions. Watch for lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes and smaller animals that are easy to overlook between the headline sightings. Take a picnic lunch to stay out longer, or follow the meal arrangements of the selected camp and departure. Return for dinner and another night in the same accommodation. A private safari allows more choice over time spent watching a particular animal; group departures follow a shared schedule.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Central Serengeti.

Day 5: Serengeti Game Viewing and Return to the Highlands

After breakfast, leave camp with wildlife viewing along the exit route before travelling back through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Keep the morning programme realistic so there is sufficient time for the road journey and entry arrangements. Stop for lunch as planned and continue to the booked highland accommodation for dinner. The final property is selected with the following morning’s crater access in mind. A crater-rim stay and a Karatu stay have different transfer times and prices; the quotation will identify the actual choice. The crater descent is reserved for Day 6.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Ngorongoro highlands or Karatu.

Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater and Return to Arusha or Moshi

Depart early and descend into Ngorongoro Crater once access arrangements are complete. Explore grassland, wetland and lake-edge habitats with the guide, looking for buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippos and predators. A black rhino sighting is possible, but cannot be guaranteed. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a permitted location and ascend in accordance with the booked access and current regulations. Continue by road to the agreed drop-off point in Arusha, or onward to Moshi if arranged. This is a long final day, especially for Moshi. Avoid committing to a same-day flight until the safari team has reviewed the flight time, airport and transfer margin.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Overnight: No overnight included.

Accommodation and Meals

Proposed accommodation plan
Night Area Accommodation approach
1 Karatu Lodge or agreed group accommodation after Tarangire
2, 3 and 4 Central Serengeti Three nights at a camp, lodge or campsite compatible with balloon pickup
5 Ngorongoro highlands or Karatu Property selected for the next morning’s crater access

Named properties, room categories, bathroom arrangements and any campsite equipment are confirmed before booking. A tented lodge with a permanent bed and private bathroom differs from a public campsite; the quotation will specify which is offered. A joining group departure does not automatically include the same accommodation choices as a private tour.

The proposed meal plan provides 5 breakfasts, 6 lunches and 5 dinners. Day 3’s bush breakfast replaces the usual camp breakfast. Drinking water is included in the requested package; other beverages and special meal arrangements are confirmed separately.

The Balloon Experience: What to Expect

The balloon morning offers a changing view of the Serengeti as light reaches the plains. The pilot chooses the launch and landing arrangements according to conditions, and the wind determines where the balloon travels. No flight route, height, particular wildlife encounter or sunrise launch time is guaranteed.

Balloon-inclusive quotation: request one flight seat, launch transfer, bush breakfast and handover back to the guide for each eligible traveller. The balloon component must appear in the written total. A private safari vehicle does not include an exclusive balloon unless specifically agreed.

Provide children’s ages, relevant mobility needs and any information requested for safe participation before paying. Age, height, weight and fitness rules depend on the selected operator. Pregnancy and some medical or mobility conditions can prevent participation; the balloon company must confirm suitability.

If weather prevents flying, the pilot’s safety decision is final. Rebooking may be possible on Day 4 if seats and the safari schedule allow. Refunds, deductions and alternative activities follow the confirmed booking terms; a replacement flight is not guaranteed.

Wildlife and Landscapes

Tarangire introduces river-country wildlife and large baobabs. Central Serengeti brings broad grasslands, kopjes and river corridors, while Ngorongoro adds a distinct enclosed crater landscape. Together, the three areas offer varied habitats without adding another park to the schedule.

This itinerary focuses on Central Serengeti. It does not automatically reach the northern Mara River crossings or the southern calving grounds. Ask for a seasonal route adjustment if the Great Migration is the main priority; extra distance may require additional days. All animal sightings remain unpredictable.

Best Time to Visit

Seasonal planning guide
Months What to consider
June–October Generally drier conditions for the northern circuit; popular travel period, so reserve rooms and balloon seats ahead.
January–February Often a useful period for a northern circuit safari. Calving-focused travel requires a separate southern-area routing discussion.
March–May Rain can affect road conditions and transfers; verify camp operations and allow flexibility.
November–December Variable short-rain conditions and greener scenery; holiday periods can limit accommodation choices.

Central Serengeti balloon operations are available year-round with some operators, but every flight still needs suitable conditions. Choose dates around the overall safari experience rather than assuming any month guarantees a flight or migration sighting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the balloon safari included?

This page is designed for a balloon-inclusive quotation. One shared flight seat for each eligible traveller, launch transfer and bush breakfast should be listed in the written package total. Confirm these before payment.

Can I join the safari from Moshi?

Yes, request Moshi pickup and return when enquiring. A joining group departure may require a separate transfer to its meeting point, while a private trip can be planned from Moshi. Timings and any supplement are confirmed in the quotation.

Does private safari mean a private balloon?

The safari vehicle is reserved for the booked party on the private option. Balloon seats are normally shared with other guests. Exclusive balloon use is a separate request, subject to availability and quotation.

Are joining group departures guaranteed every day?

No daily departure or seat availability is promised here. Kilinge Adventures must confirm the departure, group conditions and whether balloon participation fits its timings.

How many nights are spent in the Serengeti?

The proposed itinerary has three Central Serengeti nights: Nights 2, 3 and 4. Night 1 is in Karatu and Night 5 is in the Ngorongoro highlands or Karatu.

What happens if the balloon flight is cancelled?

The balloon operator decides whether conditions permit flying. A later flight can be explored if seats and the itinerary allow. The confirmed terms determine any refund or alternative arrangement.

Can children take the balloon flight?

Eligibility varies between balloon operators and can include age, height and other safety conditions. Provide each child’s age and requested details so eligibility can be confirmed before booking.

Will we see the Big Five or the Great Migration?

These destinations offer varied wildlife viewing, but no species or migration encounter is guaranteed. This Central Serengeti route is not a dedicated Mara River crossing or southern calving safari.

Can the safari end at an airport?

An airport drop-off can be requested and priced. Provide the airport and flight details before booking. The crater visit and road return make Day 6 unsuitable for many early departures.

Can I book this after climbing Kilimanjaro?

Yes, enquire about a start after the climb. Allow recovery time and confirm the mountain finish, overnight location and safari meeting arrangements, especially for a joining group departure.
