Mount Meru 2 Days Itinerary

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut and Saddle Hut

The Mount Meru section begins at Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. After registration and preparation, the trek enters the lower mountain environment and continues through montane forest toward Miriakamba Hut. The route then continues upward toward Saddle Hut, where the landscape becomes more open and the elevation increases significantly.

Overnight: Saddle Hut

Day 2: Saddle Hut to Mount Meru Summit and Momella Gate

The summit attempt begins early from Saddle Hut. The trail climbs through higher and steeper terrain toward Rhino Point and Cobra Point before continuing along the crater ridge toward Socialist Peak, the summit of Mount Meru at approximately 4,566 metres above sea level. After the summit section, descend toward Saddle Hut and continue down to Momella Gate.

Activity: Summit section and full descent

End of Meru Section: Momella Gate / Arusha area

Marangu Route 6 Days Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

The Marangu Route begins at Marangu Gate and enters the montane rainforest. The trail gradually climbs through forest vegetation toward Mandara Hut, where the first mountain overnight takes place.

Overnight: Mandara Hut

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Continue upward from Mandara Hut through the upper forest and into the heath and moorland zone. The landscape becomes more open as the trail gains elevation toward Horombo Hut.

Overnight: Horombo Hut

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

Spend an additional day around Horombo Hut and the surrounding highland environment. An acclimatization walk may be taken toward higher terrain before returning to Horombo Hut. The extra day provides additional time for the body to adjust to increased elevation.

Overnight: Horombo Hut

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Continue toward Kibo Hut through the upper moorland and alpine desert environment. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as the route approaches the high mountain zone. The day ends at Kibo Hut, where trekkers rest before the summit attempt.

Overnight: Kibo Hut

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Horombo Hut

The summit attempt begins very early from Kibo Hut. The route climbs through steep high-altitude terrain toward the crater rim and continues toward Uhuru Peak at approximately 5,895 metres above sea level. After the summit section, descend toward Kibo Hut and continue to Horombo Hut.

Overnight: Horombo Hut

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Complete the final descent from Horombo Hut through the heath and moorland before continuing into the montane rainforest. The trail passes through Mandara Hut and continues to Marangu Gate, where the six-day Marangu Route trek ends.

End of Marangu Route: Marangu Gate

Mountain Ecological Zones

ZoneGeneral Environment
Montane ForestDense vegetation and forest conditions at lower mountain elevations.
Heath and MoorlandMore open highland landscapes with distinctive vegetation and cooler conditions.
Alpine DesertSparse vegetation and increasingly exposed high-altitude terrain.
Summit ZoneCold, exposed and very high-altitude conditions around the upper mountain.

Accommodation

The Marangu Route uses designated mountain huts along the route. Mount Meru trekking accommodation depends on the selected route schedule and available mountain huts. Facilities are basic compared with conventional hotels and lodges, and exact arrangements depend on park regulations and the trekking program.

Altitude and Safety Considerations

Both Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro involve significant elevation gain. Altitude-related illness can affect individuals differently, and symptoms should be taken seriously. Cold temperatures, exhaustion, dehydration, weather changes and reduced oxygen availability are additional considerations at higher elevations.

A person who becomes unwell at altitude may need to stop ascending or descend. Decisions about continuing should be made with qualified mountain personnel and appropriate medical guidance. Summit success cannot be guaranteed.
