Mount Kilimanjarokilimanjaro 1 day trip

Why Choose This Combination?

Combining a 2-day Mount Meru trek with a 9-day Machame Route climb allows you to experience two of Tanzania’s famous mountains in one adventure. You will enjoy different landscapes, mountain views, forest trails, and challenging high-altitude trekking.

Mount Meru gives you an opportunity to experience mountain trekking before continuing to Mount Kilimanjaro. The longer Machame Route then provides more time to enjoy the scenery, adjust to the altitude, and work toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters.

Highlights of the Experience

Experience the beautiful trails of Mount Meru, including the rainforest, Miriakamba Hut, Saddle Hut, and the climb to Socialist Peak at 4,566 meters. You may also see wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, and different bird species along the route.

On the Machame Route, enjoy diverse landscapes from rainforest and moorland to the Shira Plateau and alpine desert. Highlights include Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, Karanga Camp, and the final summit climb to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters.

What to Expect

Expect a challenging but rewarding mountain adventure with changing landscapes, cool temperatures, steep trails, and beautiful views. The Mount Meru section includes forest trails, rocky paths, and a demanding climb to Socialist Peak.

After Meru, continue to Mount Kilimanjaro through the Machame Route. You will trek through rainforest, moorland, the Shira Plateau, alpine desert, and rocky high-altitude terrain before making the final climb to Uhuru Peak.

Accommodation Options

During the Mount Meru trek, accommodation is provided in mountain huts, mainly Miriakamba Hut and Saddle Hut. The huts offer a simple and comfortable place to rest after each day of trekking.

On the Machame Route, you will stay in mountain camps using tents. Quality camping equipment, sleeping tents, dining tents, and comfortable sleeping arrangements can be provided depending on the selected package.

Best Time for This Adventure

The best time for this adventure is during the dry seasons, especially from June to October and January to February. These months generally offer drier trails, clearer skies, and better conditions for mountain trekking.

The mountains can also be climbed during other months, but rain can make some trails wet and slippery, and cloud cover may reduce visibility. Good preparation, proper clothing, and suitable trekking equipment are important throughout the year.

Important Travel Tips

  • Prepare physically with regular walking, hiking, and fitness exercises before the trek.
  • Bring comfortable hiking boots, warm layers, and waterproof clothing.
  • Carry enough drinking water and stay well hydrated throughout the trek.
  • Walk slowly and maintain a steady pace, especially at higher altitudes.
  • Carry sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and personal essentials.
  • Pack light but make sure you have all the necessary trekking equipment.
  • Follow your guide’s instructions and inform them if you feel unwell.
  • Get enough rest and eat properly to maintain your energy during the climb.

Experience the Ultimate Kilimanjaro Journey

Combine the beauty of Mount Meru with the unforgettable challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro through the Machame Route. This adventure takes you through forests, mountain valleys, high-altitude landscapes, and scenic trails before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters.

With experienced guides, proper preparation, and enough time on the mountain, you can enjoy a memorable trekking experience while discovering some of Tanzania’s most beautiful mountain scenery.

The trail passes through forest and open areas, with beautiful scenery and possible wildlife sightings such as giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, and different bird species. The route gradually climbs as you enjoy the natural surroundings of Mount Meru.

Continue hiking to Miriakamba Hut at about 2,514 meters. After arrival, enjoy your meals, settle into the hut, and rest well as you prepare for the next day's climb.

Day 2

Miriakamba Hut → Saddle Hut → Socialist Peak → Momella Gate → Moshi/Arusha

Start the day early from Miriakamba Hut and continue climbing toward Saddle Hut. The trail becomes steeper as you gain altitude, with beautiful views of Mount Meru and the surrounding landscape.

From Saddle Hut, continue toward Socialist Peak at about 4,566 meters. Reach the summit and enjoy the impressive views before beginning the descent down the mountain.

Descend toward Momella Gate, where you will complete the park exit procedures. Meet your vehicle and transfer to Moshi or Arusha for rest and preparation for the Kilimanjaro climb.

Day 3

Moshi/Arusha → Machame Gate → Machame Camp

After breakfast, drive from Moshi or Arusha to Machame Gate. Complete registration and park formalities before starting the Kilimanjaro trek through the lush rainforest.

The trail gradually climbs through dense forest, with beautiful trees, plants, and birdlife along the way. Walk at a steady pace while enjoying the natural surroundings.

Continue hiking to Machame Camp, where you will enjoy your meals and settle in for the night. Rest well and prepare for the next stage of the Machame Route.

Day 4

Machame Camp → Shira Camp

After breakfast, leave Machame Camp and continue climbing through the upper rainforest toward the moorland zone. As you gain altitude, the vegetation becomes shorter and the views of Mount Kilimanjaro become more impressive.

Continue along the rocky trail toward the Shira Plateau. The changing landscape provides beautiful views of the mountain and surrounding valleys while you gradually adjust to the increasing altitude.

Arrive at Shira Camp, enjoy your meals, and rest for the night. Take time to recover and prepare for the next day's trek across the high-altitude landscape.

Day 5

Shira Camp → Shira Plateau → Shira Cathedral → Shira Camp

Start the day with a trek around the Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic areas on the Machame Route. The trail passes through open moorland and rocky terrain with wide views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Continue toward Shira Cathedral, a prominent rocky feature on the plateau. This acclimatization day allows you to explore the area at a steady pace while experiencing the high-altitude environment.

Return to Shira Camp in the afternoon for meals and rest. Prepare for the following day's climb toward Lava Tower and the descent to Barranco Camp.

Day 6

Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

After breakfast, leave Shira Camp and continue trekking toward Lava Tower. The trail gradually climbs through rocky high-altitude terrain while offering impressive views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Reach Lava Tower at about 4,630 meters and take a short rest before continuing the descent. This section follows the climb-high, sleep-low approach, giving your body an opportunity to adjust to the altitude.

Continue descending through the alpine landscape until you reach Barranco Camp. Enjoy your dinner and rest well while preparing for the next day's climb of the famous Barranco Wall.

Day 7

Barranco Camp → Barranco Wall → Karanga Camp

After breakfast, leave Barranco Camp and begin climbing the famous Barranco Wall. The trail is steep and rocky in some sections, but it provides beautiful views of the surrounding valleys and mountain slopes.

After reaching the top of the Barranco Wall, continue across ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp. The trail passes through rocky terrain and high-altitude vegetation as you gradually gain elevation.

Arrive at Karanga Camp in the afternoon, enjoy your meals, and rest for the night. Prepare for the following day's trek toward Barafu Camp.

Day 8

Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

After breakfast, leave Karanga Camp and continue trekking toward Barafu Camp. The trail passes through a dry and rocky alpine landscape with very little vegetation.

As you climb higher, the increasing altitude makes the trek more demanding. Walk slowly and maintain a steady pace while enjoying views of the surrounding mountain slopes.

Arrive at Barafu Camp and settle in for the night. Prepare your summit equipment, enjoy your meals, and rest early because the summit attempt will begin during the night.

Day 9

Barafu Camp → Stella Point → Uhuru Peak → Barafu Camp → Mweka Camp

Start the summit attempt very early, usually around midnight, from Barafu Camp. Trek slowly through the cold and darkness toward Stella Point on the crater rim, taking regular breaks along the way.

From Stella Point, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa. After reaching the summit, enjoy the views and take photographs before beginning the descent.

Descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp. After the long summit day, enjoy dinner and rest well at the camp.

Day 10

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi/Arusha

After breakfast, leave Mweka Camp and begin the final descent through the rainforest. The trail becomes easier as you lose altitude, with beautiful forest scenery along the way.

Continue hiking toward Mweka Gate, where you will complete the park exit procedures and receive your summit certificate if applicable. After completing the formalities, meet your vehicle for the transfer.

Drive back to Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved rest after completing the Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro adventure.
