Why Choose This Expedition

This expedition combines Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro in one extended 12-day adventure. It gives you more time to enjoy Tanzania’s mountain scenery, experience different landscapes, and prepare for the higher altitudes of Kilimanjaro.

The 2-day Mount Meru trek provides an early trekking and acclimatization experience, while the 10-day Machame Route allows a more gradual climb toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters.

Mount Meru Experience Highlights

Enjoy a scenic trek through the forests and landscapes of Mount Meru, with opportunities to see wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, and warthogs. The trek also offers beautiful views of the surrounding areas and Mount Kilimanjaro when the weather is clear.

The experience includes reaching Socialist Peak at about 4,566 meters, providing an exciting introduction to high-altitude trekking before continuing to the longer Machame Route on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Machame Route Highlights

The 10-day Machame Route offers a gradual and scenic journey through Kilimanjaro’s different climate zones. You will pass through rainforest, moorland, the Shira Plateau, alpine desert, and rocky high-altitude landscapes.

Highlights include Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, Karanga Valley, Barafu Camp, and the summit of Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. The longer itinerary also provides more time for acclimatization, rest, and enjoying the mountain scenery.

What to Expect

Expect a challenging but rewarding mountain adventure with long hiking days, changing weather, and different landscapes. The Mount Meru section includes forest trails, possible wildlife sightings, and high-altitude trekking.

On the 10-day Machame Route, you will experience rainforest, moorland, the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and alpine landscapes before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. The longer itinerary allows more time for acclimatization, rest, and enjoying the mountain environment.

Best Time to Climb

The best time to climb Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro is during the dry seasons, especially from June to October and January to February. These periods generally offer drier trails, clearer skies, and better mountain views.

The mountains can also be climbed during other months, but rain may make trails wetter and more slippery. Proper preparation and suitable trekking gear are important for changing weather conditions.

Travel Tips

  • Train with regular walking and hiking before the climb.
  • Bring strong, comfortable hiking boots and warm clothing.
  • Carry waterproof clothing for changing weather conditions.
  • Drink plenty of water and maintain a steady walking pace.
  • Use sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Carry personal medication and other essential items.
  • Follow your guide’s instructions, especially at high altitude.
  • Pack light while carrying all essential trekking equipment.

The trail passes through forest and open areas, offering beautiful scenery and possible wildlife sightings such as giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, and different bird species. The route gradually climbs as you enjoy the natural surroundings of Mount Meru.

Day 2

Miriakamba Hut → Socialist Peak → Momella Gate

Start the day early from Miriakamba Hut and continue climbing toward Saddle Hut. The trail becomes steeper as you gain altitude, with beautiful views of Mount Meru and the surrounding landscape.

From Saddle Hut, continue toward Socialist Peak at about 4,566 meters. Reach the summit and enjoy the impressive views before beginning the descent back down the mountain.

Descend toward Momella Gate, where you will complete the park exit procedures. Meet your vehicle and transfer to Moshi or Arusha for rest and preparation for the Kilimanjaro climb.

Day 3

Rest and Transfer → Machame Gate → Machame Camp

After breakfast, leave Moshi or Arusha and prepare for the Kilimanjaro section of the adventure. Drive to Machame Gate, where you will complete registration, park formalities, and meet your mountain crew.

Once ready, begin trekking through the lush rainforest of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail gradually climbs, passing through dense vegetation and offering opportunities to see different plants and bird species.

Continue to Machame Camp, where you will have dinner and spend the night. Rest well and prepare for the next stage of the Machame Route.

Day 4

Machame Camp → Shira Camp

After breakfast, leave Machame Camp and continue climbing toward the Shira Plateau. The trail gradually becomes steeper as you leave the rainforest and enter the open moorland zone, with beautiful views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Continue across the scenic Shira Plateau and enjoy the changing vegetation and mountain scenery. The steady pace allows you to continue adjusting to the increasing altitude.

Arrive at Shira Camp, settle in, enjoy your meals, and rest for the night. Prepare for the next day's trek toward Lava Tower and Barranco Camp.

Day 5

Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

After breakfast, leave Shira Camp and continue trekking toward Lava Tower. The trail gradually climbs through rocky high-altitude terrain while offering impressive views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Reach Lava Tower at about 4,630 meters and take a short rest before continuing. The trail then descends toward Barranco Camp, giving you an opportunity to experience the climb-high, sleep-low approach.

Continue through the alpine landscape until you reach Barranco Camp. Enjoy dinner and rest well while preparing for the next day's climb of the Barranco Wall.

Day 6

Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

After breakfast, leave Barranco Camp and begin climbing the famous Barranco Wall. The trail is steep and rocky in some sections, but it offers impressive views of the surrounding valleys and mountain slopes.

After reaching the top of the Barranco Wall, continue across ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp. The trail passes through rocky terrain and high-altitude vegetation as you gradually gain elevation.

Arrive at Karanga Camp in the afternoon, enjoy your meals, and rest for the night. Prepare for the following day's trek toward Barafu Camp.

Day 7

Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

After breakfast, leave Karanga Camp and continue trekking toward Barafu Camp. The trail passes through a dry and rocky alpine landscape with very little vegetation.

As you climb higher, the increasing altitude makes the trek more demanding. Walk slowly and maintain a steady pace while enjoying views of the surrounding mountain slopes.

Arrive at Barafu Camp and settle in for the night. Prepare your summit equipment, have your meals, and rest early because the summit attempt will begin during the night.

Day 8

Barafu Camp → Stella Point → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Start the summit attempt very early, usually around midnight, from Barafu Camp. Trek slowly through the cold and darkness toward Stella Point on the crater rim, taking regular breaks along the way.

From Stella Point, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa. After reaching the summit, enjoy the views and take photographs before beginning the descent.

Descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp. After the long summit day, enjoy dinner and rest well at the camp.

Day 9

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi/Arusha

After breakfast, leave Mweka Camp and begin the final descent through the rainforest. The trail becomes easier as you lose altitude, with beautiful forest scenery along the way.

Continue hiking toward Mweka Gate, where you will complete the park exit procedures and receive your summit certificate if applicable. After completing the formalities, meet your vehicle for the transfer.

Drive back to Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved rest after the demanding Kilimanjaro climb.

Day 10
