KILINGE ADVENTURES · GREAT MIGRATION
Serengeti Migration Safari 2027
Choose the season, camp location and safari pace that fit your 2027 travel dates.
A Serengeti migration safari 2027 begins with one decision: which part of the migration do you want to experience? Plan with Kilinge Adventures for the southern calving plains, moving herds in the western ecosystem or a northern safari near the Mara River. Match the route to the season, then choose the accommodation and time on safari that suit the party.
Serengeti Migration Safari Overview
The Great Migration is a continuing movement through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem, shaped by rainfall, water and fresh grazing. It is much more than a river crossing: vast grazing herds, newborn calves, predator encounters and long columns of animals each reveal a different part of the journey.
This page helps you choose a 2027 safari before committing to a camp or departure date. For travellers interested in the north, a suggested eight-day road itinerary follows below. Southern and western migration safaris need their own seasonal routing; they are not the same trip with different month labels.
Exact herd positions and wildlife events cannot be forecast for a particular 2027 date. The final proposal confirms the intended region, overnight locations, travel arrangements and price.
Migration Safari Highlights
- Choose a seasonal route for calving, moving herds or northern river areas.
- Plan meaningful time in the migration region rather than only passing through.
- Compare private travel with a compatible joining group departure.
- Request camps positioned for the region and dates being booked.
- Combine Serengeti wildlife with Tarangire and Ngorongoro when the itinerary allows.
- Receive a quotation showing nights, transport, fees and optional extras.
2027 Migration Calendar: Choose the Region First
| Travel period | Region to discuss | Main planning focus |
|---|---|---|
| January–March | Southern Serengeti and Ndutu | Calving-season landscapes, young wildebeest and predators; the timing varies. |
| April–May | Southern and Central Serengeti, shifting towards western areas | Herd movement during changing rains; route and camp access need particular care. |
| May–June | Western Corridor and Grumeti region, depending on conditions | Moving herds and western river habitats; Grumeti and Mara are different river systems. |
| July–October | Northern Serengeti, including the Kogatende region | Northern herds and the possibility of Mara River crossings; arrival and departure vary. |
| November–December | Central, eastern or southern areas as the herds move south | Transitional movement and fresh grazing; avoid fixing the whole trip to one predicted location. |
The windows overlap because the migration is spread across a large ecosystem. A camp chosen for August can be poorly positioned for February’s main objective. More nights in a suitable region improve flexibility, but do not guarantee the herds or a crossing.
Calving, Western Migration or River Crossings?
Southern Calving Season
Choose this when young wildebeest, open southern plains and time around the herds are the priority. Ndutu belongs to the wider southern Serengeti ecosystem, with protected-area boundaries affecting access and fees.
Explore the dedicated Ndutu calving season safari 2027 for a southern-focused itinerary.
Northern Migration Safari
Choose this when the Mara River region is the main interest. Several nights near the northern viewing areas allow time for wildlife drives and patient observation. Herds may wait, change direction or cross elsewhere; a river crossing is never an included guarantee.
Western Corridor: a western itinerary can suit travellers interested in moving herds and the Grumeti landscape. Its timing and camp choice are assessed separately from the northern route below.
Tour Facts
| Detail | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Travel year | 2027; region selected for the actual dates |
| Duration | Tailored; the northern road example below is 8 safari days and 7 nights |
| Start and finish | Arusha for the road example; Moshi and airport transfers quoted separately |
| Format | Private proposal; ask about compatible joining group departures |
| Accommodation | Lodges or tented camps matched to the confirmed route and budget |
| Transport | 4×4 road safari; fly-in alternatives require a different quotation |
| Wildlife | Natural sightings and herd movement; crossings and births cannot be guaranteed |
| Price | Quotation on request; no unconfirmed rate or discount advertised |
Private, Joining Group or Fly-In Safari?
| Option | Useful for | Confirm before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Private road safari | Couples, families, friends and photographers wanting their own vehicle | Vehicle allocation, road days, camp locations and daily flexibility within park rules |
| Joining group safari | Travellers comfortable with shared transport and an agreed schedule | Real departure availability, group size, room sharing and whether the route reaches the seasonal region |
| Fly-in safari | Travellers wishing to reduce long road transfers | Airstrip, flight availability, luggage limits, camp transfers and whether guiding vehicles are shared |
A flight into Seronera is not the same as a flight into a northern airstrip. Flight routing must match the selected camp and season. Flights and a private balloon are not included by implication in a private road safari.
Suggested 8-Day Northern Migration Safari
Seasonal example: this proposed road programme is for a northern migration focus, generally discussed for July–October. It includes three nights in Northern Serengeti, two separate Central Serengeti nights and a highland overnight before the crater visit. It is not a confirmed departure or a calving-season itinerary.
Route: Arusha → Tarangire → Karatu → Central Serengeti → Northern Serengeti, three nights → Central Serengeti → Ngorongoro highlands → Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha.
The north is a substantial road journey. The return is divided between Central Serengeti and the highlands, and transfer days are not advertised as full days at the river. Arrival accommodation is separate from these eight safari days.

Detailed Northern-Route Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire and Karatu
Meet the driver-guide at the agreed pickup point and travel to Tarangire National Park. Explore baobab country and river habitats, looking for elephants, giraffes, antelope and birdlife. Pause for a picnic lunch and continue wildlife viewing as the day allows before leaving the park for Karatu. Settle into the booked accommodation for dinner. Moshi pickup can be requested, but its additional road time must be allowed for in the first-day plan.
Meals: Lunch and dinner
Overnight: Karatu.
Day 2: Across the Highlands to Central Serengeti
Travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area after breakfast, completing entry arrangements before continuing towards Serengeti National Park. This is a transfer day with changing scenery, lunch along the route and wildlife viewing once inside the park as time permits. Continue towards the Central Serengeti accommodation for dinner. Today’s highland transit does not include a crater descent or an Olduvai Gorge visit.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Central Serengeti.
Day 3: Central Serengeti to the Northern Migration Region
Leave camp after breakfast and head north through the park. The guide balances wildlife stops with the journey required to reach the booked northern accommodation. Expect a substantial travel day rather than a full river safari. The route and arrival time depend on roads, stops and camp position. If time permits, begin exploring nearby wildlife areas before dinner and the first northern overnight.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Northern Serengeti.
Day 4: Northern Serengeti Wildlife and Mara River Areas
Spend a complete day exploring permitted northern viewing areas, with the guide responding to herd movement, road conditions and available wildlife information. If herds are near the river, there may be time to observe their behaviour from an appropriate position. They can wait for long periods or turn away without crossing. A picnic lunch can support a longer day out, according to the booked arrangements. Wildlife away from the river also forms part of the safari.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Northern Serengeti.
Day 5: A Second Full Day in Northern Serengeti
Use another complete day to revisit a promising area or explore a different part of the northern landscape. There is time to look for predators, grazing herds, elephants and river wildlife without requiring a camp change. Discuss photography priorities and the balance between waiting near the river and broader game viewing with the guide. Follow the confirmed meal programme and return to camp for the third northern night. Additional time brings flexibility, not a promise of a crossing.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Northern Serengeti.
Day 6: Northern to Central Serengeti
After breakfast, begin the southbound journey through the park. Wildlife viewing along the route is balanced against the distance to the Central Serengeti accommodation. Stop for lunch as planned and continue to camp for dinner. This overnight breaks the return journey; the programme does not attempt to combine a full northern viewing day with a road transfer all the way to the crater area.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Central Serengeti.
Day 7: Central Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Highlands
Enjoy wildlife viewing along the departure route as time permits, then leave Serengeti and continue through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Take lunch according to the travel plan and reach the booked highland accommodation for dinner. A crater-area stay or Karatu lodge is selected with the following morning’s access in mind. The exact property and transfer implications are confirmed in the quotation.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Ngorongoro highlands or Karatu.
Day 8: Ngorongoro Crater and Return to Arusha
Depart early and descend into Ngorongoro Crater after the required formalities. Explore its grassland and wetland habitats, looking for buffalo, zebra, hippos, predators and other wildlife. Black rhino sightings are possible but never certain. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a permitted site and ascend in accordance with the booked access and regulations. Continue to Arusha for the agreed drop-off. Any Moshi or airport connection must be planned around the actual journey and flight time.
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Overnight: No overnight included.
Accommodation and Meals
| Night | Area | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Karatu | Overnight after Tarangire |
| 2 | Central Serengeti | Break before the northbound transfer |
| 3, 4 and 5 | Northern Serengeti | Three nights with two complete regional viewing days |
| 6 | Central Serengeti | Break the return journey |
| 7 | Ngorongoro highlands or Karatu | Position for the crater visit |
Request the actual camp names, operating locations, room categories and bathroom arrangements before booking. A camp marketed as “migration” must still be checked for the dates in question. Seasonal camps operate from approved locations; they do not move each day with a guest’s vehicle.
The suggested road programme includes 7 breakfasts, 8 lunches and 7 dinners, plus drinking water during the safari. Pre- and post-safari hotels, other drinks and dietary arrangements are confirmed separately.
What the Proposed Road Package Includes
- 4×4 safari transport in the confirmed private or shared arrangement.
- English-speaking driver-guide, subject to the final booking.

- Game drives and transit described in the confirmed itinerary.
- Applicable Serengeti, Tarangire, Ngorongoro, transit and crater vehicle fees for the booked route.
- Listed meals, drinking water and applicable package taxes.
- Agreed Arusha town pickup and drop-off.
Accommodation concession or camping fees and any different seasonal protected-area access must be reflected in the written quotation. Southern and western variants require their own inclusions and overnight plan.
What Is Excluded
- International and domestic flights unless expressly included.
- Visas, travel insurance and personal medical expenses.
- Hotels and meals before or after the confirmed safari.
- Airport and Moshi transfers unless quoted as included.

- Alcohol, soft drinks, laundry, tips and personal purchases.
- Single-room or other supplements outside the agreed package.
Serengeti Migration Safari 2027 Cost
| Cost factor | Details to request |
|---|---|
| Dates and duration | Actual travel dates and safari nights, not just headline trip length |
| Migration region | Southern, western or northern camp locations and transport between them |
| Party and rooms | Adult/child pricing, ages, room occupancy and single supplements |
| Transport | Private/shared vehicle, flights if chosen and camp-airstrip transfers |
| Fees and meals | Applicable park/conservation/camp charges, taxes and meal plan |
| Booking terms | Currency, price per person or party, deposit, cancellation and quotation validity |
Request a tailored total from Kilinge Adventures. Camp location, dates and transport can change the cost substantially. A cheaper camp that adds long daily transfers may reduce useful viewing time. No rate, limited-space claim or discount is published without confirmation.
Optional Balloon Flights and Safari Extensions
A balloon flight may be requested where an operator serves the selected seasonal area. It is an optional extra for the road example, subject to pickup logistics, eligibility, weather and booking terms. Shared balloon seats are different from exclusive balloon use.
Extra nights can extend time in the main migration area, add another Serengeti region or connect the safari with Zanzibar or a Kilimanjaro trip. Fly-in or fly-out versions need a revised sequence, flight quotation and luggage guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best month for a Serengeti migration safari in 2027?
It depends on the experience. Discuss the southern plains for January–March, central/western areas during the transition towards May–June, and northern areas broadly around July–October. These are seasonal patterns, not exact herd forecasts.
Are Mara River crossings guaranteed?
No. Herds can remain near a river without crossing, change direction or cross out of sight. Several nights in an appropriate region allow more time, but no crossing can be guaranteed.
Is the Great Migration only in July and August?
No. Migration is a continuing annual movement through the ecosystem. The northern river season is one part of it; calving and moving herds offer different seasonal experiences.
How many nights should I stay in Northern Serengeti?
The northern road example allocates three nights, giving two complete regional viewing days. More nights can be requested according to budget and objectives.
Can one short safari cover Ndutu calving and northern crossings?
These are different seasonal priorities and distant regions. A short itinerary should target the area appropriate to the travel dates rather than promise both events.
Can I start from Moshi or Kilimanjaro Airport?
Yes, request the preferred starting point and provide arrival details. Transfer costs and timing, or an Arusha overnight, are confirmed in the proposal.
Is a joining group departure available?
Ask about dates that operate the required seasonal route. Group size, room arrangements, region and departure conditions must be confirmed before booking.
Are flights or balloon rides included?
They are excluded from the road example unless specifically added to the written quotation. Fly-in routes require different transport and transfer arrangements.
Does this northern safari include Kenya’s Maasai Mara?
No. The example stays in Tanzania and visits the Northern Serengeti side of the ecosystem. A Kenya extension needs separate transport, access and booking arrangements.
Can I book the safari for a family or photography trip?
Request the preferred pace, room setup and time at sightings. Private travel can provide greater flexibility, subject to safety, wildlife access and park rules.
