Marangu Route 3 Days Weather 2026/2027

Overview

Planning a Marangu Route 3 Days trek in 2026/2027? Understanding Kilimanjaro’s weather is important when choosing your trekking dates and preparing your clothing and equipment.

Mount Kilimanjaro does not have a typical summer and winter climate. Instead, weather conditions are mainly influenced by dry and rainy seasons, while temperature changes significantly with altitude. The Marangu Route begins in a warm, humid rainforest and gradually climbs into cooler heath and moorland environments.

For travelers looking for generally drier conditions, the main favorable periods are December to early March and late June to October. April and May are normally the wettest months, while November is associated with the short rains.

This 3-day trek reaches Horombo Hut at approximately 3,720m before descending to Marangu Gate. It is a short, non-summit trekking experience and does not include Uhuru Peak.

Why Weather Matters on the Marangu Route

Weather can significantly affect your hiking experience on Kilimanjaro. Rain can make sections of the trail wet and muddy, while cloud can reduce visibility. At higher elevations, temperatures become considerably colder, particularly during the night.

The Marangu Route has an advantage during wet conditions because it uses permanent mountain huts at Mandara and Horombo rather than tent camping.

Because the 3-day itinerary is short, choosing a period with generally favorable weather can help you spend more time enjoying the landscape rather than dealing with persistent rainfall.

Best Time to Trek

The generally drier periods for Kilimanjaro are December to early March and late June to October. TANAPA identifies the wet season around March–May and a shorter rainy period around October–November, while other current Kilimanjaro weather guidance identifies April and May as particularly wet.

January–February

January and February are among the warmer months on Kilimanjaro and generally provide favorable conditions for trekking. These months can offer a good combination of relatively dry weather and comfortable daytime temperatures at lower elevations.

March

Early March can still provide favorable trekking conditions, but rainfall generally becomes more frequent later in the month as the long-rain period approaches.

April–May

April and May are normally the wettest part of the year. Expect increased rainfall, wet trails, cloud and potentially muddy conditions, especially around the rainforest zone.

June–October

June marks the beginning of the main dry season. July, August and September are generally among the driest months, while October can continue to provide good trekking conditions before the short rains become more likely.

November

November is associated with the short rains. Conditions can change from day to day, with rainfall and cloud affecting visibility.

December

December can be variable, but conditions generally become more favorable toward January. The permanent huts on the Marangu Route provide sheltered accommodation if rain occurs.

Day 1

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your adventure starts at Marangu Gate, where you complete registration before entering Kilimanjaro National Park.

The trail climbs through the lush montane rainforest. This is one of the wetter sections of the route, and rainfall can occur even during generally dry periods because mountain weather can change quickly.

As you gain altitude, temperatures gradually become cooler before reaching Mandara Hut.

End Mandara Hut – 2,700m

After breakfast, continue toward Horombo Hut. The trail gradually leaves the rainforest and enters the heath and moorland zone.

Temperatures become cooler as elevation increases, and the landscape becomes more open. On clear days, you may have views toward Kibo and Mawenzi Peak.
