6 Days Rongai Route Kilimanjaro | Itinerary, Difficulty & Summit

Overview

The 6 Days Rongai Route Kilimanjaro is an excellent trekking option for climbers looking for a quieter and scenic approach to Africa’s highest mountain. Beginning on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, close to the Kenyan border, the Rongai Route offers a different experience from the busier southern trails.

Over six days, trekkers move through changing landscapes, from cultivated foothills and montane forest to heath, moorland and the dramatic alpine desert. The route approaches Kibo, where climbers prepare for the demanding summit attempt to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).

One of the attractive features of Rongai is that the ascent and descent follow different sides of the mountain. After reaching the summit, trekkers normally descend via the Marangu Route, creating a varied Kilimanjaro experience.

With Kilinge Adventures, the trek is organized with experienced mountain guides, porters, camping equipment, meals and logistical support throughout the expedition.

What to Pack

Proper equipment is essential for a safe and comfortable Kilimanjaro trek. Important items include warm base and insulating layers, waterproof jacket and trousers, sturdy trekking boots, warm gloves, thermal socks, warm hat, sun hat, sunglasses, headlamp with spare batteries, trekking poles, daypack, water bottles or hydration system, sleeping bag suitable for cold mountain conditions and personal toiletries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can beginners climb the 6 Days Rongai Route?

Yes, physically fit beginners can attempt Rongai because it is a trekking route rather than a technical climbing route. However, altitude remains a major challenge, so preparation and realistic expectations are important.

Does the 6 Days Rongai Route reach Uhuru Peak?

The itinerary is designed for a summit attempt to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, weather, health and mountain conditions permitting.

Where does the Rongai Route start?

The route begins at Rongai Gate on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Where does the trek finish?

After the summit, the standard descent follows the Marangu side and finishes at Marangu Gate.

Is Rongai a camping route?

Yes. Unlike the Marangu Route’s hut-based accommodation, Rongai is primarily a camping trek.

Is reaching the summit guaranteed?

No responsible Kilimanjaro operator should guarantee a summit. Success depends on factors including altitude response, health, weather, fitness and mountain conditions. Safety should always take priority over reaching the summit.

What is the hardest part of the Rongai Route?

For most trekkers, summit night is the hardest section because of the high altitude, cold conditions, steep ascent and long trekking hours.

Is 6 days enough for Rongai?

Six days is a commonly offered Rongai itinerary. However, adding acclimatization time can be beneficial for some climbers because Kilimanjaro’s altitude is a significant factor.

Day 1

Rongai Gate – Simba Camp

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with registration and preparations before proceeding to Rongai Gate on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro.
After meeting the mountain crew and completing the necessary procedures, the trek begins through cultivated landscapes and forest vegetation. The gradual trail provides a comfortable introduction to Kilimanjaro trekking. You arrive at Simba Camp for dinner and your first night on the mountain. Accommodation: Camping Main experience: Forest, northern Kilimanjaro scenery and introductory trekking.
Day 2

Simba Camp – Second Cave – Kikelewa Camp

After breakfast, continue ascending through increasingly open terrain. As elevation increases, the dense vegetation gradually gives way to heath and moorland. The trek passes the Second Cave area before continuing toward Kikelewa Camp. On a clear day, the northern side provides impressive mountain views. After arriving at camp, enjoy dinner and rest while your body continues adjusting to the increasing altitude. Accommodation: Camping Main experience: Moorland scenery, altitude gain and mountain views.
Day 3

Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Today's trek takes you toward the spectacular Mawenzi Peak, one of Kilimanjaro's three volcanic cones. Although the trekking distance is relatively manageable, the elevation gain becomes increasingly noticeable. The rugged landscape around Mawenzi provides some of the most dramatic scenery of the Rongai Route. Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, situated beneath the striking slopes of Mawenzi. Accommodation: Camping Main experience: Mawenzi scenery and high-altitude landscapes.
Day 4

Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut/Camp

After breakfast, cross the broad alpine desert known as the Saddle, which lies between Mawenzi and Kibo. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter the high-altitude environment. Eventually, you arrive at Kibo, your base for the summit attempt. Dinner is normally served early, followed by final preparations. Your guide will brief you about summit night, including clothing, equipment, pacing and expected conditions. Try to get as much rest as possible because the summit climb normally begins around midnight. Accommodation: Camping Main experience: Alpine desert, the Saddle and summit preparation.
Day 5

Kibo – Uhuru Peak – Horombo

Summit Day

This is the most demanding and rewarding day of the 6 Days Rongai Route Kilimanjaro. You wake around midnight, prepare your equipment and begin climbing slowly toward the crater rim. The steep ascent requires determination and careful pacing. Following your guide, you continue upward toward Gilman's Point, situated on the crater rim. From there, those continuing toward the main summit follow the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Standing at Uhuru Peak means reaching the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent. After photographs and a short celebration, begin the long descent. You return toward Kibo before continuing down to Horombo, where you can finally enjoy a well-earned meal and rest. Highest point: Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m Accommodation: Camping Main experience: Kilimanjaro summit and descent.
Day 6

Horombo – Marangu Gate

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the changing vegetation zones toward Marangu Gate. As you descend, the alpine landscape gradually gives way to heath and then lush montane forest. Upon reaching the gate, complete the final park procedures and celebrate completing your 6 Days Rongai Route Kilimanjaro adventure. Your Kilinge Adventures team can then transfer you from the mountain area according to your arranged travel program.
