What Is the Rongai Route Camping Experience Like?

Camping on Kilimanjaro is very different from ordinary campsite holidays. Each day, you trek from one designated mountain campsite to another while the support crew helps manage the camp logistics.

Your tent becomes your temporary home on the mountain.

In the evening, you can settle into camp, change into warmer clothing, enjoy your meal and prepare for the following day’s trek. Mornings begin with breakfast and packing your personal belongings before continuing higher.

As the altitude increases, the camping environment changes dramatically. The greener surroundings of the lower mountain gradually disappear, replaced by open moorland, rugged volcanic landscapes and eventually the cold alpine environment around Kibo.

What to Expect at the Camps

Camping is part of the adventure, but it is important for travelers to know that this is high-altitude mountain camping, not luxury lodge accommodation.

Day 1

Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer toward Rongai Gate on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After registration and final preparations, meet your mountain crew and begin trekking. The opening section takes you through the lower slopes and natural vegetation of northern Kilimanjaro. The gradual start gives you time to adjust to trekking while enjoying the quieter atmosphere for which Rongai is known. Later, you arrive at Simba Camp. This is your first opportunity to experience camping on Kilimanjaro. Settle into your tent, enjoy dinner and prepare for your first night on the mountain. Overnight: Simba Camp Accommodation: Tent camping Highlight: First Kilimanjaro camping experience
Day 2

Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp

Wake up surrounded by the mountain environment and enjoy breakfast before beginning the second day's trek. As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly open. Forest vegetation gradually gives way to heath and moorland. The route passes through the Second Cave area before continuing toward Kikelewa. When you arrive at Kikelewa Camp, the mountain feels increasingly remote. After a day of trekking, a warm meal and comfortable sleeping setup become especially welcome. Spend the evening relaxing and enjoying the surrounding highland scenery. Overnight: Kikelewa Camp Accommodation: Tent camping Highlight: Moorland scenery and peaceful northern slopes
Day 3

Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn

After breakfast, leave Kikelewa and continue toward one of the most visually impressive areas of the Rongai Route. As you approach Mawenzi, the landscape becomes more rugged and dramatic. Your destination is Mawenzi Tarn, situated beneath the striking Mawenzi massif. Camping here can be one of the memorable experiences of the route. Instead of city lights and busy surroundings, you find yourself in a remote high-altitude environment beneath one of Kilimanjaro's famous volcanic cones. Use the remaining time to rest, eat and allow your body to continue adapting to the increasing elevation. Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Accommodation: Tent camping Highlight: Spectacular Mawenzi surroundings
Day 4

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo

Today's trek crosses the broad high-altitude landscape known as the Saddle, separating Mawenzi and Kibo. The scenery becomes increasingly barren as you enter the alpine desert zone. Ahead, Kibo becomes the focus of attention because tonight is different from previous nights you are preparing for the summit. After arriving in the Kibo area, eat, organize your summit equipment and listen carefully to your guide's briefing. You will need to rest early because the summit attempt normally begins around midnight. Overnight: Kibo area Accommodation: Mountain camping Highlight: Alpine desert and summit preparation
Day 5

Kibo to Uhuru Peak to Horombo

Summit Day

This is the biggest day of your 6 Days Rongai Route Camping adventure. You wake around midnight and prepare your warm clothing, headlamp, water and essential summit equipment. Then the climb begins. Following your guide at a slow, controlled pace, you ascend through the cold darkness toward Kilimanjaro's crater rim. Your first major objective is Gilman's Point at approximately 5,685 metres. From Gilman's Point, those able to continue make the final push along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.

Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m

Reaching Uhuru Peak places you at the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent. After a short celebration and photographs, conditions permitting, begin descending. Return toward Kibo for a short rest before continuing farther down toward Horombo. By the time you reach your overnight area, you will have completed the longest and most demanding day of the trek. A warm meal and proper rest are especially welcome after the summit effort. Highest point: Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m Overnight: Horombo area Highlight: Kilimanjaro summit attempt
Day 6

Horombo to Marangu Gate

After breakfast, begin your final descent. The environment gradually becomes greener as you leave the high-altitude terrain behind and return toward the lower mountain. Eventually, the trail enters the lush forest before reaching Marangu Gate. Arriving at the gate marks the completion of six days of trekking, camping and exploring Mount Kilimanjaro. After completing the necessary procedures, meet your transfer and celebrate the end of your adventure. Destination: Marangu Gate Highlight: Completing your Kilimanjaro journey
