Best Time for a Photography Safari

June to October – Dry Season

This period generally provides good wildlife-viewing conditions, with animals often easier to spot around remaining water sources. The dry landscapes can also create strong contrast for wildlife and landscape photography.

January to March – Green Season

The landscape can be greener, providing attractive backgrounds and excellent conditions for landscape and nature photography. This period can also provide opportunities to photograph young animals.

November to December – Short Rains

The short rains can bring fresh vegetation and dramatic skies, creating colorful landscape photography opportunities.

April to May – Long Rains

The landscape is particularly green and atmospheric, while visitor numbers can be lower. Photographers should be prepared for wet conditions and potentially muddy sections of some routes.

Photography Tips for Your Safari

  • Bring a telephoto lens for distant wildlife.
  • Carry a wide-angle lens for landscapes and environmental wildlife portraits.
  • Bring extra batteries and memory cards.
  • Use a beanbag or suitable vehicle support for long-lens photography.
  • Keep camera equipment protected from dust and rain.
  • Bring binoculars to help locate wildlife before photographing it.
  • Follow your guide’s instructions and maintain safe distances from animals.
  • Be patient—some of the best photographs come from waiting for natural behavior rather than rushing between sightings.

What Makes This Photography Safari Special?

This safari is designed around visual storytelling. Instead of simply checking animals off a list, travelers have opportunities to photograph the relationship between wildlife and the landscapes they inhabit.

Tarangire provides elephants and baobabs, Ngorongoro provides dramatic crater scenery and concentrated wildlife, while Lake Manyara adds forests, wetlands, birds and Rift Valley landscapes. Together, the three destinations create a diverse three-day photographic journey through northern Tanzania.

Day 1

Arusha to Tarangire National Park – Elephants, Baobabs & Golden Landscapes

Your 3 Days Tanzania Safari Photography Trip begins in Arusha with a morning drive towards Tarangire National Park. The journey takes you through the changing landscapes of northern Tanzania before entering one of the region's most photogenic wildlife areas.

Tarangire provides an excellent opening day for photography, particularly because of its combination of wildlife and distinctive scenery. Large elephant families, baobab trees, open savannah, river areas and seasonal wetlands create opportunities for both close wildlife images and wider environmental photographs. TANAPA specifically identifies Tarangire's elephant herds, baobab galleries, birdlife and sunset viewpoints as major attractions.

Spend the day on a game drive with time to photograph elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, birds and, with luck, predators such as lions or leopards.

Your guide will help position the vehicle appropriately while maintaining safe distances from wildlife. During suitable conditions, the late afternoon can provide beautiful warm light for wildlife silhouettes, baobabs and landscape photography.

After the game drive, continue to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight.

Destination: Tarangire National Park Starting Point: Arusha Photography Focus: Elephants, baobabs, birds, landscapes and wildlife behavior Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Day 2

Arusha to Ngorongoro Crater – Wildlife & Landscape Photography

After breakfast, continue your safari photography adventure towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The journey itself provides opportunities to photograph rural Tanzania, highland scenery and changing vegetation.

Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full wildlife photography experience. The crater's combination of open grasslands, wetlands, woodland and dramatic volcanic scenery creates excellent opportunities for environmental wildlife photography.

Keep your camera ready for lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas and other wildlife. The crater is also one of Tanzania's most remarkable natural attractions and forms a major part of the country's northern safari circuit.

Take advantage of different perspectives throughout the game drive, photographing both individual animals and wider scenes that show wildlife within the crater landscape.

Enjoy a picnic lunch before continuing the photographic exploration. Later, ascend from the crater and proceed to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Destination: Ngorongoro Crater Starting Point: Arusha Photography Focus: Big game, predators, crater landscapes and wildlife behavior Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 3

Arusha to Lake Manyara National Park – Birds, Forests & Rift Valley Photography

On the final day, depart Arusha for Lake Manyara National Park, where the photographic experience changes from open savannah to forests, wetlands and lakeshore landscapes.

Lake Manyara offers a particularly diverse photographic environment. The park features groundwater forests, an alkaline lake, the Great Rift Valley escarpment, hippo pools, wetlands and acacia woodland. These habitats provide opportunities to photograph elephants, giraffes, buffalo, baboons, monkeys, hippos, birds and, with luck, tree-climbing lions.

Bird photographers can also enjoy the park's rich birdlife and seasonal waterbirds around the lake. The combination of wildlife, reflections, vegetation and dramatic Rift Valley scenery provides opportunities for both detailed wildlife portraits and wide landscape compositions.

After the game drive and lunch, begin your journey back to Arusha, bringing your 3 Days Tanzania Safari Photography Trip to an end.
