Why Choose the Mount Meru 3 Days & Machame Route 7 Days Package?

Two Mountains in One Adventure

This package allows you to experience Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro within one carefully organized trekking expedition, making it ideal for travelers seeking a longer and more diverse mountain adventure.

Additional Acclimatization Opportunity

Beginning with Mount Meru gives trekkers an opportunity to spend several days at increasing elevations before starting the Kilimanjaro climb. The Machame itinerary then continues with gradual altitude gain and designated acclimatization sections.

Scenic Machame Route

The Machame Route is known for its spectacular scenery and changing environments. The trail passes through dense rainforest, open moorland, volcanic terrain, alpine desert, and the dramatic summit zone.

Wildlife and Mountain Experience

Mount Meru is located within Arusha National Park, where trekkers may encounter wildlife along sections of the route. An armed ranger is normally required for the Mount Meru trek because of the wildlife environment.

Challenging Summit Experience

The final ascent of Kilimanjaro provides a demanding but rewarding experience as you climb toward Uhuru Peak. The combination of previous trekking experience on Meru and the structured Machame itinerary creates a comprehensive mountain challenge.

Professional Mountain Support

Throughout the expedition, professional guides and porters provide route guidance, camp support, meals, luggage carrying, and assistance with the practical demands of high-altitude trekking.

Best Time for the Mount Meru 3 Days and Machame Route 7 Days

The most favorable periods for this combined trekking package are generally the drier months of January to early March and June to October. These periods typically provide better trekking conditions, clearer mountain views, and less rainfall along the routes.

January and February are popular months for mountain trekking, while June through October offers another extended dry-season window. Conditions can still change quickly at high altitude, so trekkers should be prepared for rain, cold temperatures, wind, and rapidly changing mountain weather at any time of year.

The March to May period generally experiences more rainfall, particularly during the long rains. November can also bring shorter rains. Trekking remains possible during wetter periods, but trails can be muddy and visibility may be less predictable.

Recommended Trekking Periods

  • January – February: Generally favorable and relatively dry
  • Early March: Good option before the main long-rain period
  • June – October: Popular dry-season period
  • November: Short rains may occur; conditions can be variable
  • December: Often suitable, although short rains and changing weather are possible
  • March – May: Wetter period requiring greater preparation

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

After registration at Momella Gate, begin the trek through the beautiful lower slopes of Mount Meru. The trail passes through forest and open areas within Arusha National Park, with opportunities to observe wildlife and enjoy views of the surrounding landscape.

Continue gradually uphill toward Miriakamba Hut, where you spend the night surrounded by the forested slopes of Mount Meru.

Accommodation: Miriakamba Hut Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Day 2

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

After breakfast, continue through montane forest and heathland toward Saddle Hut. The route becomes increasingly open as you gain altitude, offering impressive views toward the Meru Crater and Ash Cone.

After reaching Saddle Hut, there is an opportunity to make a short acclimatization walk toward Little Meru (3,820m) before returning to camp and preparing for the summit ascent.

Accommodation: Saddle Hut Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 3

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak and Momella Gate

Begin the summit ascent in the early hours, following the ridge toward Socialist Peak (4,566m). Reach the summit for spectacular views across Mount Meru and, when visibility is favorable, toward Mount Kilimanjaro.

After celebrating the summit, descend through the mountain slopes toward Momella Gate. Meet the transfer vehicle and continue to your accommodation in Moshi or Arusha for rest before the Kilimanjaro section.

Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi or Arusha Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 4

Day 4: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

After registration at Machame Gate, begin the Kilimanjaro climb through the lush rainforest zone. The trail winds beneath tall trees and dense vegetation as you gradually gain altitude.

Continue toward Machame Camp, where you spend the night and prepare for the next stage of the ascent.

Accommodation: Machame Camp Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Day 5

Day 5: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Leave the rainforest behind as the trail climbs into the heath and moorland zone. The vegetation becomes shorter and the views gradually open toward the surrounding mountain landscape.

Continue toward Shira Camp, where you can enjoy views across the Shira Plateau and, depending on weather conditions, distant views of Kibo.

Accommodation: Shira Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 6

Day 6: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Today provides an important acclimatization stage. The route climbs toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,600m before descending toward Barranco Camp.

This “climb high, sleep low” approach gives your body additional exposure to altitude while you spend the night at a lower elevation. The dramatic Barranco landscape provides one of the most memorable settings on Kilimanjaro.

Accommodation: Barranco Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 7

Day 7: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

After breakfast, tackle the impressive Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting sections of the Machame Route. The climb involves hands-on scrambling in places but does not normally require technical climbing equipment.

After crossing the wall, continue through valleys and ridges toward Karanga Camp, enjoying panoramic views of the mountain landscape along the way.

Accommodation: Karanga Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 8

Day 8: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

The trail continues toward Barafu Camp, the final high camp before the summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly rocky and barren as you enter the alpine desert zone.

At Barafu, your mountain crew prepares you for the summit ascent. Rest and conserve energy while checking your equipment and preparing mentally for the final climb.

Accommodation: Barafu Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 9

Day 9: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Begin the summit ascent during the early hours, climbing through the steep terrain toward Stella Point and continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Celebrate reaching the highest point in Africa before beginning the descent toward Mweka Camp. The descent provides a major change in scenery and allows you to recover at a lower elevation.

Accommodation: Mweka Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 10

Day 10: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

After breakfast, complete the final descent through the rainforest toward Mweka Gate. After completing park formalities, receive your summit certificate and meet your transfer vehicle.

Continue to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, marking the successful completion of your Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro expedition.
