Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. After meeting your mountain guides and support crew, you will travel toward Rongai Gate, where registration and final preparations take place. The first trekking section passes through cultivated land and beautiful mountain forest. As you gain elevation, the landscape becomes quieter, offering opportunities to appreciate the natural environment and occasionally spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys and mountain birds. The trail gradually leads toward Simba Camp, where your mountain crew will prepare dinner and camping accommodation. Your first evening on Kilimanjaro provides an opportunity to relax, enjoy the mountain atmosphere, and prepare for the following day's ascent.

After breakfast, continue your journey toward the higher slopes of Kilimanjaro. The trail gradually climbs through open moorland, revealing wider views of the mountain and its surrounding landscapes. You will pass Second Cave, an important landmark on the Rongai Route, before continuing toward Kikelewa Camp. Along the way, trekkers may enjoy spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak and the changing vegetation as the mountain environment becomes more open. The day's trek includes some steeper sections, making a steady pace and adequate hydration especially important. Upon arrival at Kikelewa Camp, you will have time to rest, enjoy a warm meal, and prepare for the next day's ascent.

Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

The third day brings one of the most scenic sections of the Rongai Route. After breakfast, you will begin a steeper climb toward Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located beneath the impressive rocky formations of Mawenzi Peak. The landscape changes noticeably as you approach higher elevations. Vegetation becomes sparse, and the dramatic mountain environment creates excellent opportunities for photography and sightseeing. Although today's walking distance is relatively short, the altitude gain makes the trek physically demanding. Arriving early at Mawenzi Tarn Camp allows time for rest and gradual adjustment to the thinner mountain air. Your guide will monitor your condition and advise on hydration, pacing, and altitude-related symptoms.
Trekking Details Information
Starting Point Kikelewa Camp – 3,600 m
Destination Mawenzi Tarn Camp – approximately 4,315 m

Day 4

Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut

After an early breakfast, continue across the wide alpine saddle separating Mawenzi and Kibo, two of Kilimanjaro's major volcanic cones. This section offers dramatic views of the mountain's high-altitude environment. The terrain becomes increasingly barren, with volcanic rocks, loose gravel, and open alpine desert dominating the landscape. The trail gradually approaches Kibo Hut, the base for the final summit attempt. Upon arrival, your mountain team will prepare an early meal while your guide explains the summit schedule and important safety procedures. You will be encouraged to rest, stay hydrated, and prepare warm clothing and essential equipment before beginning the summit ascent around midnight.
Trekking Details Information
Starting Point Mawenzi Tarn Camp – 4,315 m
Destination Kibo Hut – approximately 4,700 m
Distance 8–9 km
Hiking Time 5–6 hours
Vegetation Zone Alpine desert
Accommodation Kibo Hut area, camping
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 5

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, Then Descend to Horombo Hut

This is the most challenging and rewarding day of your six-day Kilimanjaro trekking adventure. The summit attempt normally begins around midnight. Equipped with headlamps and warm mountain clothing, you will slowly ascend the steep volcanic slopes toward Gilman's Point on the crater rim. From Gilman's Point, the trail continues along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, passing spectacular high-altitude scenery and offering views of Kilimanjaro's remaining glaciers. Reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters is an extraordinary achievement. Weather and safety conditions permitting, you will have a short opportunity to celebrate, take photographs, and enjoy the incredible views from Africa's highest point. After the summit attempt, you will descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest and continue down to Horombo Hut, where your team will prepare your final night on the mountain. The summit is not guaranteed. Your guide may require a descent or turnaround if altitude illness, severe weather, exhaustion, or other safety concerns arise.
Trekking Details Information

Summit Destination Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m
Overnight Destination Horombo Hut – approximately 3,720 m
Total Distance Approximately 21–22 km

Day 6

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Return to Moshi or Arusha

The trail passes through beautiful moorland and gradually enters Kilimanjaro's lush montane rainforest. As the altitude decreases, the air becomes warmer and the vegetation becomes greener. During the descent, you can reflect on the remarkable landscapes, physical challenges, and memorable experiences of your six-day mountain adventure. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, climbers who successfully reached the relevant summit points may receive their official summit certificates according to park procedures. After completing the exit formalities, your driver will transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of your Rongai Route trekking experience.
