Meru 4 days Machame 9 days Itenary-ultimate Kilimanjaro & Mount Meru trek
Take on an unforgettable Tanzanian mountain adventure with our Meru 4 Days Machame 9 Days itinerary, a combined trekking experience featuring two spectacular peaks: Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro.
This carefully planned adventure begins with four days on Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, before moving on to the famous nine-day Machame Route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting with Meru provides an excellent opportunity to experience high-altitude trekking, explore changing mountain environments, and prepare for the longer Kilimanjaro climb.
The Machame Route is known for its scenic landscapes and varied terrain, taking you through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the high-altitude summit zone before reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro.
Why Choose the Meru 4 Days + Machame 9 Days Trek?
Combining Mount Meru with a nine-day Kilimanjaro trek allows you to experience two of Tanzania’s most impressive mountains during one extended adventure.
Mount Meru provides a quieter and more secluded trekking experience, with beautiful views across Arusha National Park. You may also encounter wildlife during the lower sections of the route. After completing Meru, you have time to rest and prepare for Kilimanjaro.
The nine-day Machame itinerary then gives you a gradual approach to the summit, with multiple days for acclimatization and plenty of time to appreciate Kilimanjaro’s changing scenery.

Mount Meru 4-Day experience
Mount Meru rises to approximately 4,566 metres (14,980 ft) and is located within Arusha National Park. The mountain combines dramatic volcanic scenery, forest, moorland and an impressive crater landscape. The lower slopes can also provide opportunities to encounter wildlife, and trekking in this area is accompanied by an armed ranger because of the wildlife environment.
Mount Meru is more than an independent trekking destination. Its altitude and terrain make it a valuable preparation for the higher elevations of Kilimanjaro, while giving trekkers the opportunity to experience a quieter mountain environment before the main climb.
The summit, Socialist Peak, stands at about 4,566 m, offering dramatic views into Meru’s crater and, under clear conditions, across toward Mount Kilimanjaro. The route also passes through distinct vegetation zones, from rainforest to heath and alpine desert.
Kilimanjaro Machame 9-Day experience
The second part of the adventure takes place on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, whose summit, Uhuru Peak, reaches 5,895 metres (19,341 ft). The Machame Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the south and is renowned for its varied scenery and challenging mountain terrain.
The Machame Route passes through several ecological zones, beginning in lush rainforest and progressing through heath and moorland, alpine desert and the high-altitude summit environment. Trekkers encounter iconic sections such as the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall and Southern Circuit before reaching the summit area.
A longer nine-day version allows additional time for acclimatization compared with the shorter Machame programs offered by many operators. A typical nine-day program includes additional mountain nights and a more gradual progression toward the summit.
Popular extensions include visits to Tanzania’s northern safari destinations or a beach holiday on Zanzibar.
What Makes This Trek Special?
The Meru 4 Days Machame 9 Days itinerary combines two different mountain experiences into one extended journey. Mount Meru offers dramatic volcanic scenery, wildlife-rich lower slopes, and a quieter trail environment, while Kilimanjaro provides the ultimate challenge of reaching Africa’s highest summit.
The nine-day Machame schedule also allows more time on the mountain than shorter Kilimanjaro itineraries. This creates opportunities to move at a controlled pace and spend additional nights at altitude.
However, previous trekking experience or completing Mount Meru does not guarantee successful acclimatization. Altitude affects people differently, and the pace and itinerary may be adjusted by your mountain guide according to weather, conditions, and your wellbeing.
Best Time for the Meru and Kilimanjaro Trek
Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout much of the year, but trekking conditions are generally more favorable during Tanzania’s drier periods.
The main trekking seasons are commonly associated with June to October and January to February. The months around the rainy seasons can bring wetter trail conditions, although experienced trekkers may still choose to travel during these periods.
Weather conditions can change quickly on both mountains, particularly at higher elevations, so appropriate clothing and equipment are essential regardless of the season.

Miriakamba Hut – Saddle Hut
After breakfast, continue toward Saddle Hut. The trail climbs through increasingly open vegetation, with views of the surrounding landscape and the dramatic slopes of Mount Meru.
Once you arrive at Saddle Hut, you can rest or take an optional acclimatization walk toward Little Meru, depending on weather and energy levels.
Trekking time: Approximately 3–5 hours Overnight: Saddle Hut
Saddle Hut – Mount Meru Summit – Miriakamba Hut
The summit day begins early. Trek along the crater rim toward Rhino Point and Cobra Point before continuing toward the summit.
At the summit, take time to enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery before beginning the descent. The route leads back toward Miriakamba Hut for the night.
This is the most demanding day of the Mount Meru section, so a steady pace and careful attention to your guide’s instructions are important.
Trekking time: Approximately 10–12 hours Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
Miriakamba Hut – Momella Gate – Arusha/Moshi

Machame Gate – Machame Camp
After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate and complete registration. Your Kilimanjaro trek then begins through the lush rainforest.
The trail gradually climbs through dense vegetation toward Machame Camp. The forest is rich in plant life and bird species, creating a refreshing introduction to the Machame Route.
Trekking time: Approximately 5–7 hours Overnight: Machame Camp

Continue toward the Shira Plateau and settle into camp for the evening.
Trekking time: Approximately 4–6 hours Overnight: Shira Camp
Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
Today is an important acclimatization day. You climb toward Lava Tower, reaching a higher elevation before descending toward Barranco Camp.
The changing landscape is particularly impressive, with giant lobelias and other high-altitude vegetation appearing along the route. Spending the night lower than your highest point of the day supports a gradual acclimatization strategy.
Trekking time: Approximately 6–8 hours Overnight: Barranco Camp
Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp
Begin the day with the exciting ascent of the Barranco Wall. Although it looks imposing from camp, the route is a manageable scrambling section when taken at a steady pace.
After reaching the top, continue across the alpine desert toward Karanga Camp.
Trekking time: Approximately 4–5 hours Overnight: Karanga Camp
Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
The trail continues toward Barafu Camp, the final high camp before the summit. The surrounding landscape becomes increasingly rugged as you enter Kilimanjaro’s alpine desert zone.
After arriving at Barafu, your main focus is rest and preparation for the summit attempt. Your guide will provide a final briefing before you have an early dinner and sleep.
Trekking time: Approximately 3–5 hours Overnight: Barafu Camp
Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
This is the biggest day of the Kilimanjaro adventure.
You begin the summit attempt during the night, following the trail toward Stella Point on the crater rim. From there, continue toward Uhuru Peak.
Standing at 5,895 meters above sea level, Uhuru Peak is the highest point in Africa. After spending some time at the summit, begin your descent toward Barafu Camp before continuing down to Mweka Camp.
The descent is physically demanding, so maintaining a controlled pace is essential.
Trekking time: Approximately 12–15 hours Overnight: Mweka Camp
Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Arusha/Moshi
Your final Kilimanjaro trekking day takes you through the rainforest toward Mweka Gate.
After reaching the gate, complete the necessary procedures and celebrate the completion of your trek with your mountain crew. You will then transfer to Arusha or Moshi for a well-deserved shower and comfortable night at your hotel.
Trekking time: Approximately 4–6 hours Overnight: Hotel in Arusha/Moshi
