9-Day Mount Meru & Machame Route Itinerary

Overview

This combined itinerary is ideal for climbers seeking proper acclimatization, a wildlife experience, and a scenic ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro. The adventure begins with a 4-day Mount Meru climb and continues with the Machame Route trek.

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut (Mount Meru)

• Transfer from Arusha to Momella Gate.
• Trek through rainforest with possible sightings of giraffes, buffalo, and monkeys.
• Overnight at Miriakamba Hut (basic hut accommodation).

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (Mount Meru)

• Trek through moorland terrain, passing Meru Crater and Ash Cone.
• Optional hike to Little Meru for acclimatization and scenic views.
• Overnight at Saddle Hut.

Day 3: Summit Socialist Peak and descend to Miriakamba Hut

• Early morning summit attempt for sunrise.
• Enjoy panoramic views including Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
• Descend back to Miriakamba Hut for overnight.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate

• Final descent through rainforest to Momella Gate.

Day 5: Machame Gate to Machame Camp (Mount Kilimanjaro)

• Drive to Machame Gate and begin the rainforest trek.
• Trek through lush rainforest to Machame Camp (2,835m).
• Overnight at Machame Camp in tents.

Day 6: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

• Ascend through moorland terrain to Shira Camp (3,840m).
• Enjoy scenic views of the Shira Plateau and Mount Kilimanjaro.
• Overnight at Shira Camp.

Day 7: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

• Trek to Lava Tower (4,640m) for acclimatization.
• Descend to Barranco Camp (3,950m).
• Overnight at Barranco Camp.

Day 8: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

• Climb Barranco Wall and trek to Karanga Camp (4,000m).
• Continue to Barafu Camp (4,600m), the base for summit attempt.
• Early dinner and rest for the summit night.

Day 9: Summit Uhuru Peak and descend to Mweka Gate

• Midnight summit attempt to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
• Witness sunrise at Africa’s highest point.
• Descend via Barafu Camp to Mweka Camp and then Mweka Gate.
• Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha. End of adventure.
