2 Days Tanzania Big Five Safari

The 2 Days Tanzania Big Five Safari is a short wildlife adventure designed for travelers who want to experience Tanzania’s famous wildlife in a limited amount of time. The safari focuses on game drives in northern Tanzania, where visitors can search for the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros. TANAPA identifies these five species as the Big Five and lists several Tanzanian parks where they can be encountered.

A practical two-day route can combine Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, starting from Arusha or Moshi. Tarangire is especially known for elephants, baobab landscapes, buffaloes, lions and other wildlife.

Why Choose a Private Big Five Safari?

A private safari gives you more flexibility with the daily schedule. You can spend additional time observing an interesting animal, take photographs and discuss wildlife with your guide without following a fixed group schedule.

The safari vehicle also provides a good viewing position during game drives while your professional guide searches for wildlife and explains the different species and landscapes.

The Big Five You May See

  • Lion: Lions are among the most sought-after animals on a Tanzania safari. Your guide will search open grasslands, woodland areas and other suitable habitats where lions may be resting or hunting.
  • Elephant: Elephants are one of the major attractions of Tarangire. TANAPA describes the park as particularly famous for its large elephant herds and baobab landscapes.
  • Buffalo: African buffaloes can be encountered in grasslands, woodland and around water sources. They may appear individually or in large groups.
  • Leopard: Leopards are present in Tanzania’s northern safari areas but are more elusive than many other animals. Your guide will search carefully in trees, rocky areas and shaded habitats.
  • Rhinoceros: Rhinoceros are among the most difficult Big Five animals to find. Ngorongoro is one of the places where visitors may have an opportunity to search for them, but a sighting cannot be promised.

Other Wildlife You May See

Besides the Big Five, this safari can provide opportunities to see:

  • Giraffes
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeest
  • Hippos
  • Hyenas
  • Warthogs
  • Gazelles
  • Elands
  • Antelopes
  • Ostriches
  • Various birds

Tarangire is also recognized for its diverse birdlife, with more than 500 bird species recorded by TANAPA.

Best Time for a Big Five Safari

  • June to October: The dry season is a popular period for wildlife viewing. In Tarangire, animals often gather around permanent water sources as surrounding areas become drier.
  • January to February: This can also be a good period for a northern Tanzania safari, with relatively dry conditions and opportunities for wildlife viewing.
  • November to December: Short rains can bring greener landscapes and seasonal wildlife activity.
  • March to May: The long rains produce green landscapes, although rainfall can affect road conditions and daily game drives.

Tanzania’s parks can be visited throughout the year, but the wildlife experience varies according to seasonal conditions.

Accommodation Options

  • Budget Camping: A good option for travelers who want to keep safari costs lower while enjoying a closer-to-nature experience.
  • Budget/Mid-Range Tented Camp: Provides a combination of safari atmosphere and comfort, with facilities depending on the selected camp.
  • Mid-Range Lodge: Suitable for travelers who prefer a private room, comfortable bed, bathroom and relaxing environment after a game drive.
