About the Marangu Route

The Marangu Route Experience

Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut
Distance: Approximately 8 km Hiking Time: 3–5 hours Elevation: 1,860 m to 2,720 m Habitat: Montane Forest
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer to Marangu Gate, where you complete registration and meet your mountain crew.
The trek begins through the lush montane rainforest, surrounded by tall trees, beautiful vegetation, and the sounds of forest birds. The trail gradually ascends toward Mandara Hut, where you will spend the night.
After arriving at the hut, you can relax and enjoy the peaceful mountain surroundings.

Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut
Distance: Approximately 12 km Hiking Time: 5–7 hours Elevation: 2,720 m to 3,720 m Habitat: Moorland
After breakfast, continue your ascent toward Horombo Hut. The forest gradually becomes thinner as you enter the beautiful moorland zone.
Along the trail, enjoy views of Kilimanjaro's volcanic landscapes and, weather permitting, impressive views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The changing vegetation and expansive scenery make this one of the most scenic sections of the trek.
Arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon and settle in for the evening.

Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut
Distance: Approximately 10 km Hiking Time: 6–8 hours Elevation: 3,720 m to 4,703 m Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, begin the gradual ascent toward Kibo Hut. The landscape becomes increasingly dry and rugged as you leave the moorland behind and enter the alpine desert zone.
The trail passes through the Saddle, a broad and striking area located between the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. From here, the environment becomes more barren as you approach the Kibo summit area.
Arrive at Kibo Hut and prepare for the summit attempt. An early dinner and rest are recommended because the summit ascent begins during the night.

Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate
Summit Elevation: 5,895 m Hiking Time: Approximately 12–16 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert & Arctic Zone
The summit day begins in the early hours of the morning. Under the guidance of your mountain crew, begin the challenging ascent toward Gilman's Point, followed by the trail toward Stella Point and ultimately Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro.
Reach the summit and take time to celebrate this incredible achievement while enjoying the spectacular views from the Roof of Africa, weather permitting.
After the summit experience, descend toward Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut. After a brief break, continue your descent through the moorland and rainforest toward Marangu Gate.
Upon reaching the gate, complete the necessary exit procedures and meet your transfer vehicle for the journey back to your hotel.
