Marangu Route 4 Days Altitude Profile

The 4-Day Marangu Route takes trekkers through several distinct altitude zones as they ascend Mount Kilimanjaro, from the lush lower slopes to the high-altitude summit of Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet).

Understanding the altitude profile is an important part of preparing for the trek. The rapid elevation gain on this four-day itinerary makes it a demanding program, particularly during the summit attempt.

Marangu Route Altitude Overview

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

The trek begins at approximately 1,860 metres above sea level at Marangu Gate. The trail climbs gradually through the montane rainforest to Mandara Hut at around 2,720 metres.

This section provides a relatively gentle introduction to the mountain, while allowing trekkers to begin adjusting to increasing elevation.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

From Mandara Hut, the trail continues upward from 2,720 metres to approximately 3,720 metres at Horombo Hut.

The rainforest gradually gives way to moorland and heather vegetation. At this elevation, trekkers may begin noticing the effects of altitude, making a slow, steady pace particularly important.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Uhuru Peak

Day three represents the most significant altitude challenge of the trek.

The route climbs from 3,720 metres at Horombo Hut toward Kibo Hut at approximately 4,703 metres. From Kibo, trekkers begin the summit ascent toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.

The summit section is normally started during the night or very early morning. After reaching the summit, trekkers descend all the way back to Horombo Hut at approximately 3,720 metres.

This substantial ascent and descent makes day three the longest and most physically demanding day of the itinerary.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

The final day is primarily a descent, dropping from approximately 3,720 metres at Horombo Hut to 1,860 metres at Marangu Gate.

The trail passes back through the moorland and rainforest zones before reaching the park gate, where the trek officially concludes.

Marangu Route Elevation Zones

As you climb Kilimanjaro, the environment changes dramatically:

  • 1,800–2,800 m: Montane rainforest

  • 2,800–4,000 m: Moorland and heather

  • 4,000–5,000 m: Alpine desert

  • Above 5,000 m: Summit and arctic zone

These changing environments are one of the defining features of the Kilimanjaro experience.

Altitude and Acclimatization

The four-day Marangu itinerary involves a relatively rapid gain in elevation, leaving less time for acclimatization than longer Kilimanjaro itineraries. Altitude affects people differently, regardless of physical fitness.

Trekkers should maintain a slow pace, stay adequately hydrated, eat regularly, and communicate any symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, unusual fatigue, or difficulty breathing to their guide.

Safety comes first: reaching Uhuru Peak is never more important than a trekker’s health. If altitude-related symptoms become concerning, the mountain guide may recommend descending to a lower elevation or ending the ascent.

The 4-Day Marangu Route therefore combines a substantial elevation gain with a demanding summit day. Proper preparation, controlled pacing, experienced guiding, and careful attention to altitude symptoms are essential for a safe and enjoyable trekking experience.
